Scene shows an island with the sun setting down
Moon narrating: Hi, you see this island? That’s the island I was born in. It has amazing beaches, huge fields to run around and play in, large mountains to climb and explore. Seems like a good place for a vacay, huh? Yeah, I would think so
Scene then shows a little girl, flying through the air
Moon: You see that little girl? That’s me. My name is Moon the Bat. And I was born with a very rare ability. “Wonder what it is? It couldn’t be flying, because she’s a bat”. True, but that’s not what it is. My guardian discovered this ability when I was a little bit more younger. Like…A year old, maybe?? Anyways, I have the ability to do magic. And no, not like magic tricks, like sawing a person in half, or guessing someone’s card. No, like “magic” magic. Unfortunately it’s called Chaos Magic, but I still call it what it is
Scene changed of kid Moon, making a magical circle in the air with a sigil in the center, then some bubbles appeared out of it. She starts to pop them as she giggles. Once they’re all popped, she continues flying
Moon: How my powers work was that I draw a circle in the air, and while it happens, a sigil appears in the center. As I focus on what I want to conjure or control, it appears out of the circle. Like if I drew a flower or any other plant in the circle, then that plant will appear. It’s kinda fun when you get used to it. But I have been told to keep them secret, and just like any other kid, my curiosity got the better of me
Kid Moon flew into a house made of bamboo and leaves, lands down on the ground, and goes to her guardian, who was an older owl man
Moon: And this is my guardian, Steelwing. The one who raised me and helped me with my found out powers. He was the one who kept telling me to stop using them because they might attract power-hungry people and take me away. But I keep telling him that I was careful and that I was hidden the whole time I was using them. …And boy, was that like a punch in the face
Other Mobians broke down the door of their house, startling the family. Kid Moon hides behind her Steelwing as he lifts up his wings, ready to fight. But instead, he grabs kid Moon and flew out the window. The Mobians who broke in starts chasing after them as they shoot arrows at them. With one Mobian shot one at Steelwing, that’s when they crashed
Steelwing: Moon, *puts her down* listen carefully. You have an amazing power I have ever seen, and that means that someone will anything to get it
Kid Moon: W-What should we do? I’m scared…
Steelwing: *held her chin up with his wing* It’s ok to be scared. But it’s not a “we” this time
Kid Moon: What…?
They heard the Mobians getting closer. Steelwing quickly pulled out a book and a small bag from a satchel he has around his shoulder. He pulled out a ring, threw it, and a portal appears
Steelwing: This world is on the far side of the galaxy. You must go there where you can be safe
Kid Moon: What? N-No, I don’t want to leave you behind! *tearing up* Th-There’s gotta be something I can do!
Steelwing: You must, and you can’t. This is the only way to keep those who are after you away *hands her the bag and book* These rings will help you travel, and the book will teach you more of your Chaos Magic ability. If you were discovered, use another ring to escape
Kid Moon: B-But…
The Mobians getting closer
Steelwing: Go, Moon. And what ever you do, don’t stop flying. Go!
Kid Moon runs through the portal, but looked back to see Steelwing was ready to fight back. She screamed for his name as she ran back
Steelwing: Goodbye, Moon…My child
Kid Moon: No! *ran through the portal, but it faded away* Steelwing! *pants and sees the portal is gone as a tear went down her face*
Moon: What to know what happens to me now? You’re about to find out…
12 years later…

It took a lot to offend Harmony. She was used to people pointing out her appearance and differences from most Mobians, something easy to see as they walked along. No one they passed had legs that were shaped the way hers were. They also didn’t have the strength or speed she did, but those weren’t as easily seen unless she was helping someone.
Although seeing one of the vendors struggling with their cart off to the side of where they were, the teen paused their conversation long enough to lift the entire thing with one hand and move it off the broken part of cobble. Now she was right back with an interested expression. “Sounds like ya have as many adventures as me and my teammates do. Hope those aliens didn’t give ya too much trouble.”
Tumblr media
She’d be half tempted to offer her aid if he ever needed it, but the question had her thinking. Emerald eyes went to his hand and the fact that he only had four fingers instead of five. Thankfully they didn’t linger and came back up to meet his eyes.
“Kinda. Everyone here in the village is friendly as long as ya ain’t tryin’ t’ start shit…” A pause. “The rest o’ Mobius might not be. We have humans here, but we also got overlanders and they’re not as friendly t’ Mobians so they’re treated the same way. Ya can tell the difference between ‘em easy… Cuz they only got four fingers and not five.”
But the Inn was coming into view as they rounded the corner of the bakery, up on the hill with the sun perfectly set along the roof to keep from being blinding in the afternoon. A few Mobians were enjoying the weather on the porch while being given drinks by the only other hybrid in the village. “That’s my dad. He’ll be able t’ recharge my Warp Ring so I can getcha home.”
He could tell she was happy about something. Assuming that the telltale sign of a wagging tail was the same here as it was for canines back home, that was. Somehow he didn't think it was the most polite thing to ask so he didn't mention it. No need to make the person who was willingly helping him upset after all. Plus it wasn't long before he was trying to take in the village as they walked and talked, and still his enthusiasm for talking about space was robust.
"It's part of our solar system back home, and for some reason the most fabled for having alien life. Which is true, by the way! My sister even became their queen for a day until me and my brother rescued her after the aliens got a little too clingy." Even as he spoke he waved back to the large Mobians, staring for a few moments before facing forward again.
Tumblr media
The village itself reminded the boy of something that might be on a postcard. He could only imagine it was twenty times more beautiful in the winter time and he wondered if they went all out with decorations here. Or if Christmas was a thing on this planet at all. Surely a different world meant different customs, but he stifled his curiosity for now.
But not his comments. "The people around here sure are friendly. Are all Mobians like this?"
He was never one to judge a book by its cover but he was seeing a lot of notable predators in the crowds. Ones that had less than flattering stories written about them back on Earth, even in children's novels.

The Rose Emerald
I got bored and I hyperfixate so this is based on the Chaos Emerald Filmverse Theory and Potential Roster
What was left of the Chaos Emeralds were split across the universe after the loss of the red gem. None of the selected planets for safekeeping were allowed to know where any emerald was sans theirs, and most of the emeralds were kept under heavy guard, heavy security, and intense secrecy.
When the fifth emerald was given to the Voxai, it was a shining green- some said brighter than the Master Emerald itself. The Voxai, of course, took their duty to guard the emerald as seriously as they could; the Overmind gave suggestions on how to build its safe place, how to keep it from those who would use it for destruction. For decades, it sat untouched in a glass chamber, inside a temple hidden amongst the Beta colony.
The second guard of the emerald, after the death of the first, was Thebes, and he’d been very nervous about his job. He’d been especially nervous when he reached the emerald and it was no longer green- the psychic energy that emanated from not just the Voxai, but from their planet itself, had leaked into the gem, regardless of their best efforts, and now it was a pale, shining pink. Almost the same color as the markings across Thebes’s translucent shell.
Not too soon after Thebes had begun his guard duties- checking on the emerald and the temple, keeping it clean and stable, making sure nobody else had broken in- the emerald started doing strange things. Glowing, rocking gently in its enclosure, seeming to breathe. The Overmind hadn’t heard of such behavior from the previous guard, and Thebes was getting quite concerned. First it changed color, then it started doing... this.
One day, he came into the temple, floating along the light, icy air of their home planet, but when he looked upon the glass case, he saw no emerald. Instead, there was a small creature- strange, not like the Voxai at all. There was no shell, only some kind of spikes along its skin, and four thick limbs waving in the air. It had a hole in its face, which it was using to make loud, angry noises. The only thing recognizable was the shade of pink. The emerald’s shining pink now coated the creature- no, the child. It was an infant. A baby.
Thebes had to be careful bringing it to the Overmind, not wanting to leave it alone but also not wanting to drop it as he flew. But without an extensive tail (only a puny one), and without familiar limbs, it was hard to even figure out how best to pick it up. Eventually he managed to use his left wings to hold it to his chest, but then it kept screaming and spitting some kind of liquid onto him, which was very unpleasant.
He finally got it to the Overmind, and after several hours of confused discussion, a deep dive into the nearest library, and frantic scrambling to get some kind of nutrients for the infant to get it to stop crying, they finally had information for Thebes. And instructions.
“It’s a Mobian- the kind of alien that held the emeralds first.” Overmind Leucosia explained, as a carrier was tied to Thebes’s shell. “It seems that the Chaos Emerald has shifted into an infant mobian- we must do further research to determine what this means. In the meantime- you are the emerald’s guardian still. So guard the child.”
Thebes had very much not wanted to hear that. He had enough anxiety as it was, he couldn’t add a child on top of that. He didn’t even know how to take care of Voxian children, and they were easy- just a few mental outbursts here and there. And now he had to care for an alien child with needs he couldn’t understand and with the strangest appearance he’d ever seen, and...
Overmind Riadne seemed to sense his fear, and reached out to him, sending a gentle wave through his mind. It calmed him, the comfort she was offering him leaking into his body, his wings flickering slower and his tail swooshing from side-to-side.
He finally moved his gaze downwards, to the carrier strapped to him. Inside of it, the little baby Emerald was curled up, its tiny hands clutching onto the material, rubbing its face against it. It had stopped crying, and instead just looked peaceful. Happy.
“Okay.”
---
The Emerald had given itself life. And it was now a little mobian, crawling across the floor, putting its mouth on anything it came across and falling over with the slightest breeze.
Mobians were very different than Thebes had ever thought. Only a few of them could fly, and they saw with what Thebes had thought were simple markings on the face. They often had differing skin, differing heights and weights, and very strangely, differing minds. Voxai could be individual, yes, but they had a hivemind to connect them, to make them part of each other. The Mobians had no such connection, leaving them all alone to think on their own. How lonely that must be, Thebes thought. To not be able to calm another’s fears, or cheer another on in such a simple, yet intimate way.
The Overmind’s research had yielded nothing. No tales of the emeralds taking form, no tales of any changes in the stones... Thebes wondered if it was his fault, but he couldn’t think of anything at all out of the ordinary he’d done leading up to the transformation, nor could anyone else. But nevertheless, the Emerald didn’t seem to be turning back, so they just had to work with what they had.
Thebes floated to the child, brushing it with a wing. It felt him, and looked up, letting out a loud noise that Thebes had discerned to be laughter. It reached up its arms, trying to grab his wings and lift itself high into the air.
It will need a name, Thebes thought. If it will stay mortal.
The child lifted its arms again, its fists opening and closing, trying to grab onto its guardian. “Up-mi!” it called- it had recently begun attempting to communicate, though its words made little sense. “Uh-mi!”
What is that, little one?
“Uh! Mi!”
Amy. That was a name that meant beloved.
That was fitting.
---
Amy had moved into childhood, and she still would not stop getting into trouble. She climbed on everything she could, trying to get high enough to jump on a Voxai for a surprise ride. She would grab small objects, swinging them around as some kind of game. She poured through tablets, her eyes faster than light as she absorbed whatever information she could get her hands on.
“Thebes, what does ‘sy-kick’ mean?” she asked.
(They had found that while she could connect to the hivemind, it was a very weak link, and so it was easier for her to speak aloud, and for the Voxai to respond in their normal way.)
“Psychic, Amy.” Thebes replied, floating beside her. “It is a word often used to mean one who connects to another’s mind- or sees forward into the future.”
“Like you!”
“Like the Voxai, yes.”
“Am I psychic?”
“A little. We’re not entirely sure what the expanse of your abilities is.”
“I dunno what that means.”
Yes, it took her a bit longer to learn larger words than it would the average Voxai child. “We don’t know what you can do.”
“I can do this!” Amy jumped, grabbing onto his wing and swinging back-and-forth. “Whee, whee, whee!”
Amy was certainly a strange child. She shouted, she cried, and she had to always be moving. She didn’t seem to have an appreciation for stillness whatsoever, and instead needed to run, or jump, or climb, or swing. She could not fly, was barely connected to the hivemind, and was always being loud.
She was a strange child, and she was the Voxai’s child.
It had taken them quite a while to get used to her, but by the time she seemed to gain sentience, the whole colony had gotten into the swing of letting her run and play in her own way. And it wasn’t as if she wasn’t like them whatsoever- it barely mattered that they couldn’t connect to her thoughts, as she always spoke them aloud. She would try to help as much as she could, using her strange limbs to carry materials to and from construction sites, or help garden the small, sparse patches of land that could produce nutrients. She would watch the Voxai children play their own games, and join in when there was a game that didn’t require wings or an intense connection to the Overmind. If she couldn’t join in, she would cheer everyone on, or find a way to play referee, so it was never like she was lonely or left out.
She had a strange way of showing physical affection, too, but they accommodated her as best they could. While Voxai would usually show affection via their hivemind- or, if they had to be physical, by brushing wings or tails- Amy was always grabbing onto some part of them. Forget simple brushing, Amy would climb up their tails, swing on their wings, and cling to their backs, leaning against them and just feeling them breathe under her. At first, it was strange, but it seemed to help her- the more physical affection she got, the more comfortable she seemed, so soon the Beta Colony was used to treating her a bit differently, in pretty much every way.
Yes, she was a strange child, and she was the Voxai’s child. But most importantly, at least to Thebes... she was his child.
He had been there when she learned how to walk- he’d studied for months on how mobians moved so he could best help her amble along. He was there when she picked out what nutrients she liked to eat and would throw the others on the ground, and he would teach her that was rude and she really should have just expressed that she didn’t want them. He was there when she started to speak, learning along with her how best to communicate. He was there when she fell asleep against him that first night, curling his wing around her like a blanket, and he was there, teaching her how to spell and count. He took her to the library to study whatever languages they had, fascinated with how quickly she picked them up, feeling intensely proud of her for running to the nearest librarian to practice her sentence structure. He was there when she scraped her knee and began to cry, and they figured out how to make it feel better. He was there when she’d cry again, reading a sad book, and he was there when she’d run to him, reciting quickly something funny she’d read in a different story in hopes that he would laugh, too, at least in his own way.
Whenever he expressed how proud he was of her, he could see her eyes light up, and then she’d shut them tight and wiggle her nose a little, her smile brightening even the darkest of nights. If he had to express disappointment- if, for example, she said something unnecessarily cruel to another child, or she hid the scroll she broke instead of admitting to it, she would get very upset, leaking water from her eyes, and she would promise to never repeat the behavior, knowing now that it wasn’t right. Thebes hated seeing her upset, but then later, when she did the right thing instead of repeating wrong behavior, he got to be proud of her again, and see her bright smile.
She wasn’t perfect, by any means. Mainly, she had some issues expressing her anger in a healthy way. More than once he had to show disappointment in her breaking something in a fit of fury- though, honestly, he wasn’t quite sure if her way of breaking things was normal for a mobian or not. She would kick a rock and watch it shatter into pieces, or punch a wall and create a gaping hole. He didn’t think mobians were supposed to do that- and it got even stranger when she would stomp on the ground during a tantrum and create a crater, or lift up an entire house to grab a lost toy. Most worryingly, when she was angered, her normally green eyes would spark with energy, glowing the same pink as her quills. He knew that most Voxai couldn’t do these things, certainly, and though she was clearly not a normal Voxai, he wasn’t sure if she was a normal mobian, either.
He also wasn’t sure if that was good or not.
---
Once every cycle, Thebes would take Amy to visit the Overmind, so they could check on her progress. Afterwards, she would play with a toy they’d found for her, while the adults would discuss their research. Since she’d started talking, Amy was always very well-behaved when with the Overmind, addressing them by name and asking them how their cycle had been, answering all of their questions with a smile while bouncing on her paws and letting her tail wag back-and-forth. Then she’d go play, oblivious to whatever discussion was happening around or about her.
That started to change as she got older, though, and it was because of Thebes, unfortunately. Thebes had been unable to hide his discomfort at times, and though he’d told a questioning Amy that nothing was wrong, really, she could sense that something was troubling him.
Indeed, as the years pressed on, he felt that the Overmind was... becoming strange. The hivemind was meant to encourage them all, but sometimes he’d hear whispers of the Overmind being too pushy, sending out instructions that some Voxai couldn’t make themselves disobey. He’d never experienced it himself, but the more he visited with Amy, the more he started to see signs of something strange going on with them. He didn’t know if it was the stress around the lost Chaos Emerald, a corruption of power, a new behavior they’d picked up from another planet they’d trade with, or a combination of all of it, but they were, indeed, getting pushy. They’d ask him questions that were normally considered impolite, about himself and about Amy. At times, they talked about her as if she wasn’t at all alive, as if she were still an emerald locked up in a hidden temple. That above all made Thebes angry. She may have once been that emerald, but now she was Amy, his Amy, who loved to read and play in the garden and climb on whatever she could find, who was curious about this world and any other world she researched.
It worried Thebes, but not enough.
---
One cycle, when Amy was about eight or nine years old, the Overmind stated that in their research, they thought she may be able to summon things with her mind. Bring items out of nothing. Thebes thought this was ridiculous, but he agreed to try with her.
It took several weeks of work, of Amy sitting on the ground, imagining items she’d want to create, and then growing bored and wandering to the garden. Thebes would help as best he could, but in her natural Outermind state, as well as the strangeness of the situation, he couldn’t do much.
One day, she sat with him on the floor of their home, and said, “I don’t know what they want from me, really. What would make them proud of me?”
Thebes sighed, and brushed her with his wing. “Don’t think about that, Amy. What matters is I am very proud of you for trying. You don’t need to succeed if you cannot do it.”
Amy smiled and wiggled her nose at his praise, but then said, “I think I can. I really do. But I keep changing my mind on what I should bring about.”
Thebes considered. “What about those tools you use to help us build our homes? We only get those during trading periods with other worlds- wouldn’t it be useful if you could get them whenever you wanted?”
“That would be nice.” Amy nodded, considering. “I’ll try that.”
It took much longer, but she seemed more focused after that, sitting and humming and trying to make things out of thin air. But Thebes could sense her getting frustrated every day she failed, and though he assured her she didn’t need to do anything she was incapable of, it seemed every day she wanted more and more to do this magic.
Finally, one day, in the garden, she’d sat down among the stones to try and summon something. Then she stood, angered, and stomped a stone into shards. “This is awful! I can’t do it!”
“You don’t have to--”
“But I should be able to! I should be able to do anything with my head, like the rest of you! But nooo, I can’t even do anything normal! I don’t even look normal!”
"Amy.” Thebes said stiffly. “You are normal for your species.”
“Pfft, as if! I’m pretty sure most mobians don’t form out of magic emeralds!”
“Amy, please keep yourself controlled.”
“Why does it matter? I can’t even be like you!” Amy huffed, tears springing to her eyes. “How can I be anything special if I can’t be normal first? No, I’m just weird little Amy! Strange little Amy! Dumb little Amy!”
“Nobody thinks that.”
“They should! Cause that is who I am!”
In her fury, Amy turned towards the large stone behind her, and acted instinctively; what she had wanted to do was punch it, get some of her anger out by destroying the rock she’d sat against. Instead, her hands reached up behind her, in a position not very equipped for punching. And to both her and Thebes’s surprise, in the few seconds it took her to swing, a colorful, extra-large hammer appeared in her hands, and she brought its face to the rock. The impact turned the rock to an explosion of dust.
When the cloud settled, both Thebes and Amy stared in shock. Then, slowly, Amy smiled, and laughed, looking down at her hammer. Then she spun, laughing harder, beginning to dance. “Thebes, look! I did it! I did it! I made something! I made something! I did it right!”
It turned out she didn’t need to think like a Voxai to do it- to retreat into her mind, to focus on the energy around her. What she had to do was think like Amy. To think with her heart, her feelings.
Of course, Thebes was proud of her, but he also had a heavy heart at her previous words. After she’d calmed down, she threw the hammer into the air, making it disappear. And once she’d calmed from that action, which she thought was equally impressive, Thebes took her inside and sat her down.
“Amy, do you really think you’re incapable? That you’re... what was the word?”
Amy curled in on herself; it was an action she did when she was embarrassed, or upset. “Weird? Strange?”
“Amy, you’ve never been like that.”
“Don’t lie.” Amy sighed, glancing up at him. “I know you all just put up with me. I don’t act like a Voxai, and whenever I try, it feels wrong. I have to climb things and touch things, I can’t fly or lift things with my brain, I can barely even hear the hivemind. I’m just a weird outermind.”
“Has anyone told you this?”
“No... but I can tell.” Amy sighed. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed that I have to have you fly me up to certain areas, cause nobody thought they’d have someone who couldn’t fly wandering around. Or that there are games I can’t play, or that I don’t have wings and my tail is too small, and I have these legs and arms that none of you know what to do with. I can tell I’m... different.”
Thebes floated beside her, and then curled against her, draping his wings over her like a blanket, as he had when she was just an infant. “Different does not mean wrong, Amy.”
“But it makes it harder on all of you.”
“And we don’t mind.” Thebes brushed against her again. “Do you remember when Croesus’s family’s home was destroyed in that quake, but you ran there before everyone else at night, before we could rebuild?”
“Yeah.”
“And you figured out that it was a location very sensitive to quakes, so you found them a better spot and started building on your own?”
“Yeah...”
“That was all you. You used a Voxai sense, to feel the world around you, and your own research to figure out what was wrong with the location. And then you used your strength to begin building.”
“I guess.”
“Amy, you’re not a Voxai.” Thebes said quietly. “But I don’t think you’re quite a mobian, either. And you’re not a simple stone, locked away without a mind. You’re Amy, the Rose-Colored Emerald who became the Rose-Colored Hedgehog. You’re a curious girl, a temperamental girl, and overall, a kind girl who wants to do no more than help those around her. And that is not ‘weird’ or ‘strange.’ That is not even ‘normal.’ That is special. You are special, to me and to everyone in this colony.”
For a moment, Amy was quiet, and Thebes was worried he may have made things worse, due to the tears that returned to her eyes. But then she leapt up, clinging to him as she always did, burying her face against his skin, and he knew she was going to be alright.
Unfortunately, that didn’t last long.
---
Their next appointment with the Overmind, Thebes was under the impression that Amy was simply playing in the other room. He would discern later that she, instead, sat there, eyes shut, doing her best to connect to the hivemind, to listen to what they were saying, to figure out if they were proud of her for her summoning- which she’d been practicing since her first victory- or upset at her for doing it in a strange way. There was more she’d wanted to know, too- she was curious as to what they talked about when she was busy, fearful that they were saying bad things about her, and... well, recently, she’d become concerned about Thebes’s occasional worry, his distance when thinking about the Overmind. Thebes could tell that Amy wanted him to stop being scared, he just never thought she’d stop her playtime to figure out what was worrying him so.
Unfortunately, this was just about the worst time she could have listened in.
The Overmind had compiled their years of research on Chaos Emeralds, mobian culture, and Amy’s own behavior, and concluded that her magical abilities were powerful beyond their imagining. Her fits of strength, her glowing eyes, were all things that they’d never heard of any species doing, let alone mobians. The summoning only confirmed what they thought- her origins as an emerald had given her not just power, but what seemed to be an unlimited power.
Thebes stayed quiet as they presented this, but then their words turned to what they could use her power for. It was, again, as if she were a simple stone again, one that had been locked away to prevent those from using this power in the way the Overmind was discussing. They brought up how her strength could be used as a weapon, her energy to summon great things for the Overmind and terrible things for their enemies.
“What enemies?” Thebes asked. “We have always been a peaceful society.”
“But with this power,” they tried to say, “We could have a better planet, one without seas of rocks, without quakes.”
“We are fine with the rocks. We don’t need a planet of branches to get tangled in or dirt and water to drag us down.”
“You are not thinking clearly, Thebes. Just because you are used to what you have doesn’t mean you can’t want more.”
“You are trying to use her for battle, something that we hid the emerald to prevent from happening. But now you know what she can do, you want to use her for violence. Have you thought about what she wants to do with her power?”
“She is one of us, and thus in service to the Overmind. So she will be happy to do what we tell her.”
“That is not what your power is supposed to be used for.”
“Perhaps it is. Perhaps we should encourage you to think so, too.”
That must have been when Amy broke; Thebes had a strong will, she must have known, and would have resisted the Overmind trying to force him into something he didn’t want to do. But she had fear, the fear that he would be forced into a shell of himself, that the Overmind would take her away from him and use her in a way that wouldn’t make him proud.
She burst into the room, screaming for them to stop, to leave him alone, and her eyes were glowing pink, her body sparking with that intense energy. They turned to see her, and she raised her hands, wanting to simply express her anger. But again, she acted instinctively; her hands formed around the summoned hammer, and she slammed it into the ground.
The energy that burst up caused chaos. Everyone in the room with Amy felt their connections to each other severed as they were thrown back, into the wall, thudding against it as the child screamed. A blinding light seemed to burst from her, flowing into the sky and across the colony. For a few brief seconds, there was no hivemind, and everyone was alone, and began to panic. Even when it returned, there was that fear, that horror that it might happen again. The blast of energy also hit several stones, several homes, causing them to shake, a few to burst.
When Amy came back to her senses, her eyes widened with horror, and she dropped the hammer, causing it to disappear before it hit the ground. She stepped back, looking in fear at what she’d done, and then she ran.
She couldn’t get far before Thebes caught up, curling his tail around her to carry her to someplace safe and calm. But she screamed as he lifted her, kicking and screaming for him to let her go, to let her get away from him, and the Overmind, and everyone. He could feel her energy as she screamed- she was not angry, but she was terrified, a level of fear he’d never thought her capable of.
He took her to a quiet cave, and when he dropped her, she curled into a ball, crying and screaming ot herself.
“Amy,” he said.
“Don’t touch me! I’ll hurt you again! Don’t touch me!”
He realized that he would not be able to reason with her in this state, and that made him fearful- reason was what he knew best, after all. But he had to remain strong, remain calm, to keep her from panicking farther. So he floated back, and for a long, long, while, let her get her emotions out. She screamed and sobbed, pounding her fists against the floor to make small craters, slamming herself into the wall to cause it to rumble... it was terrifying, how much the small child was capable of, and how she didn’t seem to care if she hurt herself in her breakdown.
But finally, finally, after what felt like forever, her cries quieted, and she stopped slamming against the stone, and instead curled up into a ball, finally calming herself. Slowly, Thebes approached, though he kept at a distance in case she did not want to be touched.
“Amy.” he said again. Then, when she did not respond, “Amy.”
“What?”
He sighed and floated beside her, brushing her quills with his tail. “You are not to blame for what happened. You didn’t know that was possible.”
“But I hurt you.”
“I’m alright. I’m more concerned about you.”
“I’m a monster.”
“Never.” Thebes lowered himself, so that he was covering her with his wings. “It is like I said. You are Amy.”
Amy slowly unfurled from the ball, and then climbed onto his back, wrapping her arms around him in an embrace.
“Are the Overmind gonna take me away?” she sniffled.
“I would never let them.”
“I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“I know.”
“I like it here. I don’t want another planet.” Amy pressed herself farther against him. “I don’t even want Mobius. I just want to be here, at home, and make everyone happy.”
Thebes felt his heart swell. “Then you shall stay. Amy, my Amy, you make us happy just by being here.”
“What if I just ruined it? And everyone’s scared of me?”
Thebes considered, and then said, “I know I would never be.”
Amy sighed, and then embraced him tighter. “Then I guess it’ll be okay. So long as you’re still here.”
---
Thebes had to smuggle Amy back to the house, fearful of questions or some kind of repercussions from the Overmind. But when they were finally back in their colony, at their home, Amy quickly scampered into her makeshift bed, curling beneath the blankets that had once been the sling Thebes used to carry her as an infant, and soon was snoring soundly. Thebes wasn’t quite sure what to do while she slept, so he tidied the house, and then sat at the window, staring out into the sky. He thought it best to let Amy sleep, to let her dream of a place without trouble.
What he didn’t know is that that would be the last time she’d have that luxury for quite some time.
---
Amy awoke to the rumble of the ground, and the sound of screams.
Thebes flew to her as fast as he could, and saw her rubbing her eyes, having momentarily forgotten what had happened the previous day. She blinked up at him, sleep still a distant glimmer in her green eyes- he realized, only now, with a heavy heart, they were the same green that the Chaos Emerald had been before it changed. The emerald within her soul.
“Wha’s going on?” she asked blearily, as Thebes swept her up in his wings.
“We’re under attack.”
“What?” That was almost a foreign concept to her. Then she blinked away her exhaustion, and began to tremble. “The Overmind?”
“Worse.”
“Wh- what’s--?”
Amy soon found out, as Thebes swept her onto his back and began to fly as fast as he could. Amy began to shake, letting out startled cries, as she looked to the sky, which had turned blood-red, something dark and looming floating above them and blocking their light. Around her, Voxai were scrambling, panicking, their thoughts a jumble bursting into a confused hivemind. They flew as fast as Thebes could manage, but even in the quick movements, Amy could see the shadows of creatures, strange creatures she couldn’t recall reading about, leaping onto Voxai, smashing them into the ground, screeching and roaring.
“What are they?”
Thebes was hesitant, but then he said, “They’re here for you. So we have to get you safe.”
“What?”
“They must have sensed that explosion of Chaos Energy. So they want your power- and trust me, what they could do with your power is worse than anything even the Overmind, even in this state, could imagine.”
Amy grabbed onto him tighter, shutting her eyes and trying to think of something, anything else, to block out the screams, the crashes, the roars.
When Thebes began to slow, Amy opened her eyes, scared he might have been cornered. Instead, she saw them floating in front of some tall, elaborate building- far more decorated than any other practical Voxai residence.
“Where are we?”
Before Thebes could answer, they heard more screams, more screeching- and then, a horrifying hiss. They turned behind them, and Amy whimpered as they saw a thick gas spreading in the area behind them. As they watched, every Voxai that came in contact with it completely froze, unable to move. Their screams, however, could still be heard in the hivemind- they were conscious, but unable to move at all, leaving them ripe for the taking of the invading monsters.
Amy finally let out a terrified scream, and that pushed Thebes fast enough to act. He took off flying again, into the temple, the one where Amy had been born so long ago. He could only hope he could outrun the gas for long enough to save her.
He burst through the temple, only slowing whenever it seemed that Amy was slipping. He could feel her tremble against him, looking up and around at the temple halls, curiosity and confusion bursting into her fear.
Thebes had not been in the temple for about a decade now, but he still knew the pathways, every nook and cranny, and before long he was able to get them to the chamber that had once held the emerald that became the hedgehog clinging to him now. Once there, he let Amy slide off his back, and flew to the wall, counting the bricks.
“What are you doing?”
“Only the Overmind knew we had one of these,” he said, “and only the guardian of the Emerald’s Temple knew where it was. And... here! Amy, move this stone.”
“The Emerald’s Temple?” Amy asked, realization dawning on her. Then she ran over, pulling a loose stone from the wall as Thebes said. There was something behind it, and she reached inside, pulling out...
“A ring?”
“It’s a teleporter.” Thebes explained. He hooked it around his tail, taking it from her. “It will take you far away from here, where they won’t be able to find you.”
“Wh-what?”
They heard roaring, then, echoing through the temple halls.
“They’re inside.” he said, almost disbelievingly. Then, he shook his head. “You have to leave, before that paralyzing gas reaches you and you can no longer escape them.”
“But you’re coming too, right?”
Thebes took a deep, steady breath. “Those monsters will be here before long. I will not let them follow you.”
“What does that mean? Thebes?”
Thebes then flung the ring into the air. With a jing sound, it expanded, opening up into a huge, dark portal. On the other side was a world Thebes knew Amy had read about, one where she’d be able to survive until she found someone to care for her.
“Listen to me. Your power is unlike anything we could have imagined. That means there will always be someone looking to use it for evil. Do not let anyone use you. Your power is yours- which means it is something beautiful.”
“What are you saying?”
“You must hurry.”
“No!” she stomped her foot, causing a floor rumble. “I won’t leave you! I’ll fight them, I’ll protect you! I’m not leaving!”
There wasn’t time to argue, and Thebes knew it. Even with her strength, he doubted a child as young as she would be a match for the invading creatures, especially with their paralyzing agent. He couldn’t let them use her for their dark ends, hurt her for their horrible means.
He wrapped his wings around her, as he had when she was a baby. Then he spun, and flung her into the ring.
“Thebes!” she screeched, and he watched his daughter disappear into the ring portal, and, as best he could, sent her a calming wave of energy before it could close and the aliens could reach him.
---
Amy ran to where the portal had been, clawing at the air, then the dirt beneath her fingers, much more dirt than she was used to. “No! No! Thebes! Thebes, bring me back! Dad! BRING ME BACK!”
Her eyes sparked with that pink energy, tears flowing from her and landing on the ground, before turning into steam from the magic within her. It finally hit her that the ring would not open again, that Thebes had sent her away, and that... that Voxai... they must all be...
She sunk to her knees, unable to hold herself up any longer. She stared into space, letting the strange wind hit her, feeling the strange plants under her, and letting herself cry.
This was her fault.
No.
But it is. They were after me. My power.
Amy hugged herself, despair overwhelming her.
Then, slowly, Thebes’s words entered her mind. “You are not to blame for what happened. You didn’t know that was possible.”
But if it wasn’t for me, they wouldn’t be dying right now.
What would Thebes say to that? “It doesn’t matter. It happened, and you must go on.”
How could I go on without my family? My home?
“That is for you to decide.”
She shivered, hugging herself tighter and curling into a ball, hearing those last words in her head. “Your power is yours- which means it is something beautiful.”
Right now, it sure didn’t feel beautiful.
But after a while, she sat up, the words ringing in her head. Thebes sent her away, but not out of fear of her. To keep her safe. She couldn’t let that be in vain. She couldn’t sink into despair in the middle of this strange place. That wasn’t what Thebes would want.
She struggled to her feet, taking a few steps before sinking again. And then she got up, and took another step, and another, focusing on making her way across the unusual terrain.
She walked for what must have been hours, the sky above changing from its dark black to a bright blue. It seemed strange, that the sky could brighten when her home was gone, that anything could be light ever again. She felt heat against her quills as she pushed through tall plants- trees, she thought, from her reading. She found a long trickle of water- a river. It was strange, seeing one of those- usually on Voxai, their water was extracted from the small plants that survived on the stone. It was amazing that someone could have so much water it flowed across the land.
There were stones in the middle of the river, and as she hopped across them, she felt a brief flash of home- except these rocks were wet, and slippery. It was almost like a taunt, reminding her she would never be home again.
But she followed the river. Most species needed water to survive, so she’d find someone. As she walked, she wondered if she wanted to do this at all- what if they wanted to hurt her, too, and Thebes’s sacrifice had been for nothing? But then, what if she wasted away in the woods, dying because she didn’t understand how this world worked? No, she had to at least see who lived here. This had to be a planet she read about, right?
She’d been walking for so long her legs ached, but she kept pushing on, until she finally reached the river’s end. She looked up at a huge waterfall, amazed by the roar it produced, the droplets flickering onto her. She’d never seen anything like it.
There was a rustle behind her, and she jumped, turning. On instinct, she pulled the hammer, again, out of air, in case one of those monsters had followed her.
Instead, something flew at her, too fast for her to react. But when it stopped, right in front of her face, she saw it was something organic, something alive. A bright teal creature, flapping with tiny pink wings. It had legs and arms like her, and blinking eyes, these a dark blue as opposed to her green. It stared for a long while, and she stared back, the two of them trying to figure each other out.
She heard a rustle again, and the creature retreated a little bit, turning to look. Amy’s stare was then directed at what emerged from the plants.
A mobian.
She was small, miniscule. A little girl, with the same body shape as Amy, the same head, limbs... but she wasn’t a hedgehog. She had long ears, so long that she tripped over them as she waddled over, and a puffy, bushy tail.
“Hi!” the creature said, in the Mobian language. “I’m Cream, and this is my very best friend, Cheese. What’s your name?”
Amy kept staring.
“Maybe you cannot talk yet.”
Amy swallowed a cry, and then carefully said, “I’m Amy.”
“Oh! You can talk! I’m so glad. A lot of people don’t visit the garden, mama says. I bet she wants to meet you. We take care of the chao, like Cheese. Do you like chao? Do you want some food? We have cookies--”
She sure talked a lot for someone who was so young- barely past the toddler stage, probably. At least, Amy figured. She didn’t know how fast mobian children developed. All she knew was... herself.
Amy turned to river, watching her rippling reflection. She was filthy, with red cheeks and dark circles under her eyes. But she looked mainly up at the quills on her face, which pointed outwards, spiking like jagged stones.
Slowly, as the rabbit talked, she reached up, pulling her quills down. If she pulled them to point down, against the sides of her head, it almost looked like a Voxai shell.
“--my house is back this way. I bet Mama will be real real happy to see you, we like having visitors. And we have pretty pretty flowers! Do you wanna see?”
Flowers. Amy had never seen one up close before. She wondered if there’d be one the color Thebes had described her as. The Rose-Colored Emerald, he’d said.
“Okay.” she said, and followed the rabbit through the garden.

Scars You Can’t See - Chapter 10
Chapter title: Short Fuses
Word count: about 3400 words
Author’s Note: Hopefully this chapter is up to the usual standards, especially considering I completed it in about a week. I really want to try and stay on schedule as much as I can especially considering that I have about six other ideas all begging to be written the second this fic is finished.
Warning for descriptions of violence, just in case.

...
The loud slam of a car door made the two Mobians still inside it jump.
Shadow and Rouge stared out the window, horrified, as Omega drew himself up to his full height of four feet and eleven inches and stared down the troops. When he’d seen his friends so scared, so certain that this was the end, something inside him had snapped.
He wasn’t ordinarily the type to process much in the way of emotion. His circuits hadn’t been built for it in the first place, but so much rewiring and extra work had been done by now that he’d almost become more than his processors and coding. And...meeting two people who understood him in a way he’d never thought possible had done a lot for his personality as well. By now, Omega had grown to care for these two organics more than he had ever thought possible since the day they had first met.
And now he was furious.
“I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.” he thundered, his voice blasting out of his speakers at top volume. “YOU HAVE CHASED US ALL OVER THIS CHAOSDAMNED COUNTRY. YOU HAVE TRAUMATIZED BOTH OF MY FRIENDS. AND YOU HAVE RUINED OUR LIVES.
“I WILL GIVE YOU ONE CHANCE TO GET OUT OF HERE. ONE. CHANCE. THEN I START FIRING. AND I WILL NOT STOP.”
He immediately began to power on all of the weapons that he could possibly use at once. Everything from machine guns to missiles to lasers started to warm up and make clicking noises as his ammunition slid into place. Omega made sure to load a few extra explosive charges into his weaponry- his targeting systems had been significantly improved after some time in Tails’s workshop, but they still weren’t perfect. Especially not with this level of opponents.
He found that he didn’t really care.
(His only real worry was that the firing noises would stress out Shadow.)
The G.U.N. soldiers refused to back down, and oh how Omega wished that he could properly express the blend of frustration, rage, and just the tiniest bit of satisfaction that burned and sparked through his wires. As it was, he simply had to settle for speaking.
“YOU’RE NOT GOING?” he asked.
One of the apparent leaders pulled out a megaphone, and the robot’s head spun ninety degrees directly to the right to face him. “I DIDN’T SAY YOU COULD TALK.”
A single shot ripped the megaphone from the man’s hand.
“NOW LEAVE US ALONE.”
The actual fighting forces were almost entirely made up of G.U.N. drones, so Omega began tearing into those with ease. Explosions of flame appeared across the field as his shots scattered all around the first wave.
The E-series robot was at least a little pleased that it seemed like he wouldn’t have to physically fight any humans today, though. He’d spent enough time around Rouge and Shadow to know that they’d both be horrified if he did- and he wasn’t going to upset them. Not now.
As it was, he was holding his ground impressively, considering that G.U.N.’s mechanical soldiers were top-of-the-line creations, built specifically with fighting software according to the organization’s highest standards. They were loaded with the latest weapons, and made with light material so that they could move quickly across the battlefield.
But they had never before faced down a nearly three thousand pound robot built by a mad genius with a destructive streak a mile wide….so they were basically being mowed into the ground.
Before long, though, their orders suddenly appeared to change, and a squad started heading directly for the car which still held his two closest friends.
A laser blast incinerated the first few with the full power of Omega’s protective fury behind it, but having two targets to manage- himself and the car- was a lot for anyone to handle. If he turned his attention to the drones swarming the vehicle, then they would get too close to him and start trying to tear him apart. But if he focused for too long on those tearing at his chassis, they could easily break into the car.
Once, when he was busy dealing with an irritating detachment of flying robots, one of the ground fighters broke through a window and started reaching for Shadow and Rouge. The hybrid managed to stab it through the face with a Chaos Spear, but almost immediately went limp against the seat afterwards, clearly struggling to maintain consciousness.
With a scream of static, Omega sent the next few assailants who dared attack his friends flying, but there were just too many for him to handle alone.
As the robots began to climb atop the car, Omega stopped paying attention to the ones trying to tear him apart and focused his aim on the others, but one managed to grab his arm and sent the shots flying wildly around their brethren, skittering across the top of the vehicle.
Omega felt his ammunition starting to run low and wished he had a chance to grab some extras, but even the slightest pause could mean failure now. The drones were clawing at his body, at the car, and they just kept on coming.
He couldn’t last much longer...
And that was when a truck to his right exploded in a giant ball of fire.
The robot was startled for a moment- he hadn’t been aiming for the trucks at all! A moment later, though, a roaring noise sounded directly overhead, and Omega looked up to see what was perhaps the best sight to grace his optics in months.
A red biplane wheeled around overhead before taking another shot directly at the drones surrounding him, leaving him perfectly free to blast the rest off of the car. The E-series robot was also certain he heard a faint “Heck yeah!” from above, and indeed, when his vision focused properly, he spotted a small blue shape standing atop the wings of the plane.
Omega could see Rouge smiling- actually smiling- from inside the car, as she shook Shadow back into awareness. The moment Omega saw her say the name ‘Sonic’, Shadow jolted upright and scrambled to the window despite his shaking limbs, staring up at the Tornado in shock.
He said something to Rouge then, who responded with a light smack on his shoulder, looking more relieved than anything else.
After a few more moments, the tide had begun to turn, and Omega soon heard someone patching directly into his auditory processors. A familiar high-pitched voice asked, “Omega! Do you read me?”
“Affirmative.” he replied, blasting another few drones into oblivion. “It is good to see you, Tails.”
“You too.” the fox replied happily, clearly pleased to have arrived in time.
“Okay,” Tails continued, his voice becoming more serious, “can you get Shadow and Rouge to fly up to the plane? I can’t land, but I need to get them out of here if they can’t fight.”
“I will inform them at once.”
Omega stalked over to the car, physically shoving several more drones off it and allowing them to land with a loud clatter on more of their kind. Rouge wound down the window, still looking optimistic.
“Alright, what’s the plan now?” she asked him, a sparkle in her eyes.
He blew up a couple of flying bots to his left in big blasts of fire before responding. “Unfortunately, you will have to fly Shadow directly upwards to the plane. This is the best way to get out.”
Rouge groaned. “Chaos...I don’t have to lift you too, right?”
“No.” Omega said. “I will stay here and keep them busy until your return.”
“Won’t you be alright?” she asked him worriedly, placing a hand on his arm.
“We’re not leaving you.”, Shadow insisted. His eyes were narrowed, but the determined effect was undermined by the way his body slumped against the seat, as though it were the only thing keeping him upright.
Suddenly, another voice spoke up. “Come on, you think I can’t watch this big guy’s back?”
Sonic walked up next to Omega and leaned forward on the car’s window. At first, he wore his trademark smile (tinged with a little extra relief), but it quickly turned to shock after he did a double take. “Uh...that is you guys, right? Cause last I checked, Rouge isn’t edgy and you don’t dress like a nerd.” he said, pointing at Shadow.
“I don’t look like a nerd.” Shadow mumbled irritably, glowering at him.
“You actually kinda do, hon.” Rouge said, her smile growing wider.
The hybrid’s eyes widened. “But you picked this outfit out...Rouge!”
Omega played an audio file of a person clearing their throat while causing another explosion. “While I am certain this conversation is pleasant for all involved, please consider continuing it when we are not surrounded by mechanical troops trying to tear our limbs off.”
All three Mobians looked sheepish. “Alright then, let’s go.” Rouge said, refocusing and flexing her wings in preparation for takeoff.
“We will cover you. Do not worry.” Omega assured them both.
Shadow still frowned at him, before clasping his small gloved hand around the robot’s large metal finger. “Don’t go doing anything too crazy, alright?”
Rouge grinned again, though a little less brightly, before stepping out of the vehicle for the first time that day. “He’ll be okay. Us, on the other hand...you know what, let’s just do it.”
Then she grabbed onto Shadow’s hand and immediately blasted fifteen feet directly upwards in the air. Tails soared as low as he could possibly dare to go in the meantime, even tilting the plane to the side slightly so that Shadow could climb into the seat.
Some flying G.U.N. robots began to close in on Rouge as her wings beat frantically, struggling to gain more height. Omega couldn’t fire now- there was too much risk of him hitting her- but then he realized that Sonic was already handling it. The hero bounced off of the car, then a robot, before launching himself up high into the air and spindashing all of the drones, bouncing from one to the next like a wild blue pinball.
Meanwhile, the E-series robot busied himself with spraying explosives and laser fire across the entire field, finally feeling free to properly tear into the opposing forces. At one point, he actually lifted the car above his head, set it on fire, and threw it with all of his strength directly at an advancing wave of drones, taking out an entire platoon.
(The car rental company would just have to deal with it.)
Omega heard a small chuckle to his right, and looked over to see the blue hero himself standing there and smirking up at him. “You’re pretty ticked off, huh?” he asked.
“YES.” Omega replied, putting as much loathing and distaste behind that one word as he possibly could whilst throwing a drone several yards into the nearest tree.
Sonic’s grin tightened in response, and something shifted deep within his eyes, transforming them into a blazing green flame. His entire expression practically screamed ‘you messed with the wrong people this time, idiots’.
“Hey, pal?” he asked, his words deceptively light and loose. “I heard you can blast curled-up ‘hogs like me outta those arm cannons of yours. Mind if I give it a whirl?” The blue-and-gold robot could practically feel the growl that lay hidden beneath his voice...and decided that he definitely approved.
In response, Omega’s hand simply retracted into his arm, leaving a perfectly Mobian-sized barrel behind. Sonic immediately curled up on the ground, and the robot scooped him into the cannon with ease, before aiming it at the mechanical soldiers marching towards them yet again. “Ready?” he asked.
“Always.” the hero hissed from within his quills, curling up tighter.
One second later, he was fired out of Omega’s arm at high speed, before ricocheting off about a dozen robots hard enough to shear most of them in half. Sonic uncurled after that, bouncing to his feet with an expression barely qualifying as a smile as drones fell beneath his feet and fists.
Not long after that, Omega heard the whir of a G.U.N. troop carrier above them and saw an entire new wave of reinforcements dropping in- the organization clearly wasn’t willing to risk their human soldiers on two such dangerous foes. While the blue blur was certainly helpful, he knew that they couldn’t hold off endless amounts of these machines, and would unfortunately tire or run out of ammo eventually.
Which was why he was incredibly grateful to see Tails’s biplane soaring into the fray just moments later, prepared to sweep them both to safety. (While he enjoyed giving G.U.N. its long-withheld punishment, he also wanted to survive long enough to see his friends healthy and happy again, of course.)
“Omega! I need you to get on top of that truck!” Tails ordered through his audial processors. “I can try and pick you and Sonic up from there!”
The robot acted immediately, barreling through the lines of drones with incredible strength. To his left, he saw Sonic doing the same- jumping over the bots’ heads and up onto the trailer. The hero fought to hold off some physical soldiers with punches and kicks carefully calculated to bruise, but not kill.
Omega clawed his way up to the top of the truck, leaving deep gouges in the side as he heaved himself over the edge. They both scanned the sky, watching as Tails waited for the right opening…
Suddenly, the Tornado dove sharply downwards, carving through lines of machinery as it soared towards them. Its wings nearly skimmed the trees as it closed in on them. Sonic tensed, preparing to leap, as Tails yelled, “Jump on...now!”
Omega’s reflexes were not exactly what one might call good, unfortunately, having been built with strength in mind over speed. Thankfully, Sonic grabbed hold of his arm, and that combined with his rocket boosters was enough to sling him face-first over the seat as Tails pulled upwards.
Turning his head to the side as he struggled into the plane, the E-series robot caught a glimpse of Sonic braced on the main wing of the Tornado as they put more and more distance between themselves and the ambush site with every second. However, he also quickly spied several flying drones headed their way.
Clearly, Tails had too. “Omega! Can you take care of those for me? And strap in, ‘cause I’m about to try and shake these people for good!”
He began to empty his cartridges as quickly as possible at those infernal machines, nothing more than hollow shells of metal twisted to serve an evil master. Omega had never been more grateful that he was made with free will. Most of the drones fell quickly, but were easily replaced by more of their brethren.
The blue and gold robot was disgusted at the very thought of being expendable.
“Hang on tight!” the fox yelled.
A jolt shook the entire Tornado as its turbo engines fired, causing the plane to blast forward at such speeds that the ground blurred beneath them. G.U.N. just didn’t have the technology available to catch up with them, especially not while they were this high up.
Soon enough, Angel Island came into view, but it almost looked like it was...moving away from them?
Sonic saw Omega’s ‘frown’ and explained quickly. “Angel Island doesn’t move too fast, and the Tornado gets some crazy mileage with these new engines! We figured Knux oughta get a head start on those creeps.”
At least Knuckles wasn’t avoiding the action out of cowardice, then. If he had been, Omega would have punched his Master Emerald straight off the island, ‘duties’ be damned.
As they came in for a landing, the robot practically felt his chassis grow heavier the more he looked around. Shadow was slumped against a tree near the edge of the clearing, while Rouge was leaning on the steps of the altar, exhausted. Knuckles was sitting cross-legged atop the Master Emerald, his eyes closed as he focused on directing the island where he needed it to go.
“Shadow!” Sonic shouted, jumping off the plane. His face was twisted with concern as he rushed over to his friend. “Dude, why aren’t ya up with the Emerald? Chaos knows you need that energy!”
The hybrid groaned faintly, turning his head to face them. “Knuckles...is busy with it. Don’t want to...interrupt now- we need to get away.”
Omega glowered at him. “Enough of this nonsense. If you insist upon behaving in such a manner, then I will have to make you take care of yourself. Again.” The robot scooped Shadow up in his arms and began to physically carry him to the altar, despite the latter’s protests and squirming.
Sonic and Rouge giggled practically in tandem, and Shadow glared at them both. “Shut it.”
“What, hon?” Rouge smirked. “This is the second time Omega’s picked you up in like a week, can’t I enjoy it?”
The robot ignored them both and placed Shadow on the altar carefully, the hybrid’s body too weak to do anything more than just lie there. Quickly, though, the Chaos energy began to seep into him, restoring some true life to his eyes.
He didn’t have much more than twenty minutes to rest, unfortunately, before G.U.N.’s best planes began to catch up with the island’s sluggish movement. The four battle-ready inhabitants of Angel Island readied themselves the moment they heard the first aircraft roar in the distance.
Rouge spoke up first, though. “Shadow, honey, I absolutely hate asking this of you, and if there was any other way to get out of here that I could think of then I would take it. But I can tell that there’s at least three Chaos Emeralds on this island, and with how good you’ve gotten at teleporting...if Sonic and Knuckles helped, could you zap us out of here?”
Shadow dragged himself to his feet with the help of the Master Emerald, sighing. “Yes. I’ll need Knuckles to channel as much energy into us as he possibly can, and at least one of the Emeralds. Sonic can use another.”
Sonic and Knuckles both looked startled. “No way, man!” the hero exclaimed. “You could really hurt yourself that way!”
“So help me then.” Shadow replied flatly, looking at him over his glasses.
The blue hedgehog sighed reluctantly and stood on the other side of the Master Emerald from him, holding out his hand. “You got your Emerald, lil’ bro?”
Tails placed it in his hand as Knuckles handed Shadow one of the two he’d been holding onto. Then, the echidna placed both of his hands on the great gemstone, breathed in, and sent as much power as he could flowing into both of the hedgehogs.
Their eyes locked, and Shadow inclined his head almost imperceptibly.
“Chaos….Control!!”
The entire island vanished.
It reappeared moments later, above the ocean. Sonic would have plenty of time to be concerned about all the water, but for now, he was more preoccupied with Shadow. He hovered nearby as the hybrid’s eyes unfocused slowly and he swayed from side to side.
The hero caught him a moment later as he crumpled, unconscious. Feeling for a heartbeat, he sighed with relief the moment he found a steady pulse in Shadow’s wrist.
“He simply needs rest.” Omega said, watching as Sonic laid him back down at the altar (before lying down right next to him, having exhausted his own Chaos stores as well). “As do you,” he added, spinning his head to the right to stare at Rouge.
The robot continued to stare at her, unflinching despite her glower, until she lay down on the grass with an irritated sigh. “I’m supposed to be the one taking care of this team, you know.”
Omega folded his arms. “And you may do so soon. After you get some rest.”
Rouge closed her eyes and seemed to relax soon enough. Omega stood exactly in between his two friends, watching over them with a careful eye.
After a minute or two, he heard Knuckles whisper to his friends, “How do you guys think she figured out that we had those emeralds?”
Without opening her eyes or moving at all, Rouge replied, “I’m just that talented, babe.”
The resulting startled shriek from her boyfriend made birds a hundred feet away flee their trees in fear.

It was one of those easy days for Sonic. After the long run, he softly made his way through the Resistance HQ's. The automatic doors opened and as he took some steps forward, he was bombarded with the liveliness of the place. The Resistance was a rusty place, it definitely needed remodeling but to the blue hedgehog, it gave a comfy atmosphere. It smelled like wet soil, one of Sonic's favorite smell, he even ran to places that were raining just to smell it and have the pleasure of it. He expected to be greeted by the other agents but it seemed like they were too busy to care that he was here. They ran to what it seemed to the Resistance's main room. As Sonic made his way through the halls, the agents bumped into him. They always apologized to him but they made sure to keep their eyes on the location.
Sonic had finally reached the Main Room where it got complicated to get in. The agents all pushed each other, standing on their tippy-toes to try and get a look at the immense computer that was placed right in the middle of the room.
"What is all of this fuzz about?"
Sonic looked at the Mobian next to him, a green wolf boy with glasses who seemed way too excited to be here.
"Captain has gone to a mission for the first time!" the green wolf's stayed stuck on the computer's screen, not noticing that the one next to him was no other than Sonic the Hedgehog. "I've only heard stories about how great of a fighter Ms.Rose was! I can't wait to see her in action-"
The green boy finally turned to look at the blue hedgehog and he gasps at the realization. One of his idols was standing right in front of him, the blue hedgehog was one of the reasons why he joined the Resistance, in the hope that he would see him one day.
And that day was today.
"Amy for sure is a skilled fighter but," Sonic said, he smiled at the green wolf. Although he didn't care for fame, it was fun to see other's reactions to him and it lowkey raised his ego. "What is she doing out there in the field? I thought she was always too busy to take on missions."
"Captain Rose said that this mission was too dangerous for any of us to take," the wolf boy said, looking around the room nervously. "And she couldn't contact anyone from Team Dark nor Silver and Blaze and you weren't here nor Knuckles so she decided to go by herself."
Sonic knew that Amy was strong and she could perfectly take care of herself. Nonetheless, there was always this feeling of uncertainty, he cares too much for her to give a blind eye on the situation. His eyes were now glued to the enormous computer screen. For now, it was only blue and the screen had the words 'connecting...' as if it was waiting for a transmission to start. The agents still pushed each other to try and get as many people inside as possible. However, all chatter and movement were stopped the moment they saw that the computer screen no longer showed the previous words. Now it was showing live footage.
"How are we seeing this?" Sonic asked again as he could perfectly see the pink hedgehog he missed so much showing up on the screen.
"Mr.Miles sent a small android to accompany Ms.Rose, it's recording live," the wolf, although he was very excited to see his idol, he also wanted to see the heroine in peace. Mentally he wished Sonic stopped asking questions and instead just enjoy the show along with him.
The blue hedgehog didn't know what was going on and actually, he didn't need it. The flying android allowed everyone to see live the adventure of Amy Rose through the gigantic computer screen displayed in the middle of the room.
With no further actions, Sonic just lay back and relaxed, waiting for Amy to display her abilities.
The screen showed the pink hedgehog walk towards an army of egg bots. Probably around 50 of them or so Sonic thought, maybe even more.
"I don't want to hurt any of you but ..." Amy's voice had deepened and her stance was strong. To Sonic this was unknown, he had never seen Amy look so ... strong. "But if you don't give me my friend back in three minutes ... I won't have an option."
The Eggbots didn't think about it for a second and they were fast to throw a metallic spear at Amy.
Sonic flinched instinctively, and he shook aa little. However, he was relieved and surprised to see that Amy very calmly only moved her head to the side to dodge the spear.
"Is that all you got?" Amy said. Instantly the agents in the Main Room all stare at the computer screen in awe.
"Come on! Shadow's Chaos Spears are better than that!"
Sonic didn't know what to be more surprised at. That there was a possibility that Shadow had thrown a Chaos Spear at Amy or that Amy thought that Shadow's Chaos Spears were weak.
As if to answer her question, all 50 robots threw metallic spears at the pink hedgehog at the same time. Amy was quick to pull out her hammer and with it, she ricocheted the spears back at the Eggbots one by one.
The Main Room of the Resistance was filled with excited screaming, cheers and applause as they watched their captain being a total badass. Sonic meanwhile, was remembering the day Amy let him carry her hammer. The famous Piko-Pink hammer wasn't heavy ... it was impossible to pick up. Sonic could only lift it a few centimeters of the ground once and that was it. Watching Amy move it so easily and with such a fast technique made Sonic ... sightly impressed, he had to admit that much.
He continued to watch the screen as saw Amy ran at full speed towards the Eggbots. She was fierce and fast, using the strength of her hammer she would destroy each robot that dared to stand in her way.
Amy threw her hammer and it landed directly in the Eggbot that was guarding Eggman's entrance to his base. She did a backflip as to dodge the spear attack of one the Eggbots and finished, she landed a kick that went right through the Eggbot's metallic inside.
Amy snapped her fingers and quick her hammer appeared in her hand again. The pink hedgehog destroyed everything in her way. She had such a unique technique and stance that he had only seen been accomplished by a very well trained black hedgehog.
The green wolf looked at with excitement at the computer screen in front of him and he controls the need to fanboy his platonic crush. He looked next to him and found something rather amusing. Sonic the Hedgehog was utterly impressed and he could tell by the way his green eyes opened more as each second passed by.
Sonic had always known that Amy was an extremely gifted fighter ... But holy Chaos she was utterly strong. He knew for sure that the pink hedgehog had done some training in the six months that he was gone running around the world. Her fighting style reminded him of Shadow and Sonic wonder if they had spent some time training together while he was gone.
He would be lying if he said that the thought alone didn't bother him. Sonic trusted the love Amy had for him but he also knew that the pink hedgehog could bring the best out of people ... and a certain black hedgehog may have liked that about her.
However, a certain sense of proudness filled the blue hedgehog's soul. Watching the Resistance's agents fanboy and fangirl about his favorite pink hedgehog, made his heart smile. He wanted to face them, point at the computer screen and tell everyone, 'Look at her! Isn't she so cool! That's my Amy Rose!"
Although he was too shy to ever say something like that out loud.
The android that Tails made to follow Amy had suddenly stopped as the pink hedgehog entered Eggman's base. As if they were watching a movie, the agents and Sonic were waiting for their Captain to come out victorious of her mission. However, panic began to overtake them as the computer screen showed Eggman's base lit up on fire, bombs after bombs were detonated. Sonic held his breath in as to stop himself from running and finding her.
"Come on Amy ... Get out."
A few more seconds passed until finally, the pink hedgehog came out of Eggman's base victorious. Carrying in her back, a very well known red echidna.
The Resistance exploded in cheering and screaming, clapping. Sonic couldn't stop feeling a great sense of peace and especially, happiness. He began to cheer as well, even if Amy wasn't able to hear him. Sonic went as far as to give the green wolf next to him a small hug, which took him by surprise.
That was Amy ... his Amy.
.
When Amy came back to the Resistance, she was greeted by cheers and applause from the other agents. Although she wasn't badly hurt, there were some cuts and wounds that she needed to take off. She was in the infirmary, where Knuckles was sleeping in his bed peacefully. He had gone to Eggman's base to retrieve one of the Chaos Emerald but he had run into trouble and Eggman captured him.
So, of course, she had to go and save his butt again.
Not like she minds.
She was putting a bandage around her right arm when suddenly, someone entered the infirmary.
It was her favorite blue hedgehog.
"Sonic! I wasn't expecting you to come here today," Amy said, still seating on the edge of her bed.
Sonic smiled as she walked towards her and took a seat next to her. "Yeah, I was passing by ... So, how are you?"
"I am good, I definitely had worse," Amy was still trying to tie a bandage around her arm and seeing her struggle, Sonic took over her task. She blushed a little seeing act so kindly towards her.
"I saw you on your mission today," Sonic said concentrating his sight into treating Amy's bandages.
The pink one looked at him, her blush getting redder by the second.
Sonic looked at Amy as he finished tying her bandage. "It was dangerous."
Amy felt a sense of guilt wash over her and disappointment came with it too. The last thing she wanted was to make Sonic worry about her-
"But it was really cool, too!"
As Sonic smiled, Amy's heart skipped a bit. "The way you use your hammer was so cool! The punches and kicks! The way you moved your way towards the entrance of Eggman's base was out of this world-"
For a second, Amy thought that she had died in that mission and she was now in heaven. The love of her life was not only taking care of her, but he was praising her as well. Like an excited child in a candy store, Sonic was listing all the thing he loved about Amy without realizing.
"You were so cool, amazing, fantastic and-"
"For Chaos ..."
Their moment was interrupted as they turned their attention to the red hurt echidna in front of them.
"Would you two just kiss already?"

Cybernetics- Cyberpunk!Sonic AU- Chapter 4
Amy Rose has been working tirelessly at her broken down booth for as long as she can imagine. Ever since Tails left their work to join forces with the revered hero of Mobius, ‘The Blue Blur’, she’s grown lonely and desperate to make her life exciting. A strange customer comes in one day asking her to fix his cyborg arm, what she didn’t know was that he would be the catalyst for a brand new life.

Previous/Next
He had walked Amy back to her booth that night, thanking her for her service on his arm, and claiming that he’d come back if he ever needed anything else. She’d offered for him to come by any time to say hello and thanked him for the dinner, but with his personality she quite frankly doubted she’d ever see him again. She’d turned to walk into her booth, and by the time she’d looked over her shoulder to see which direction he’d already disappeared without a sound. She wondered how he did it.
Anyways, she was feeling quite refreshed this morning. Smiling at every potential customer that passed, fixing minor defects on ProjScreens for free, finally talking to someone outside of work had done a world of good for her. Amy could tell it had cleansed her mind and relaxed her a bit, and she felt a bit more like she had when Tails had co-owned the booth with her. She didn’t know how long this feeling of security and peacefulness would last, but she intended to take advantage of it for as long as she could. So, she put up her ‘be back soon’ sign and stepped out of her booth to go and visit Whisper.
The rusty bell jingled as she pushed open the creaking wood door, Whisper’s weapon shop bustled quietly with activity. A few children stood staring at an impressive sword like weapon in a glass case, and a few seemingly more serious buyers turned a base model of a blaster over in their hands.
“Amy! Come on behind the counter.” Whisper’s damaged voice reached Amy’s perked ears as the mechanic turned to look at the weapon maker and quickly headed to get behind the counter.
“Hey Whisper, sorry I couldn’t do this last night.” She apologized as she walked around the counter to stand in front of the wolf mobian.
“It’s quite fine, I understand being exhausted. I caught a glimpse of the piece you were putting back on, it looked very different from anything I’ve ever seen before.”
“It was pretty strange, but enough about my work, what have you got for me?” Amy redirected the conversation as it twisted to be on ‘Myst’s strange cyborg arms. She was sure he wouldn’t want them to be a topic of conversation, even if she didn’t know him that well, she could tell that much.
Whisper merely nodded in response before reaching under the counter and pulling out the model. As it was, it looked a lot like the metal ‘bag’ structure she’d been picturing.
“It’s made out of aluminum, so when you finish it I’m assuming you’ll make it with perhaps cobalt or some other lightweight strong metal, but this is the base form.” She explained. “The strap is here-“ Whisper popped open a compartment and the strap fell out. She continued to speak as she hooked it on to a loop on either end. “-it has magnetic fibers in it, so when you want to be able to go from using it as a weapon to using it as a bag quickly, it can just attach itself to the outside, as long as your metal is magnetic.” Whisper hung the bag over her shoulder to demonstrate how it looked. When she dropped the bag from her shoulder, she pressed a button on the top and the handle of the hammer shot out the other side. Whisper grasped it by the handle and twirled it a few times before stopping to grip it with both hands in a strong stance. “And here’s the finished product.”
“Wow...” Amy breathed out in awe as Whisper lowered it and handed it to her. “I can’t wait to work on it!” She smiled. “Beautiful work, Whisper, really.”
“I’m glad you think so.” She smiled back. “I can’t do lunch today, unfortunately, but something tells me you want to get to work right away.”
“Right- I’ll see you later, Whisper.” She smiled as Whisper waved a quiet good bye.
Amy weaved through the stands displaying weapons and out onto the busy, outer ring streets, where she dodged mobians walking quickly past her to get back into her booth and put away her ‘be back soon’ sign. She set the model down on her desk and quickly got to work on it, now eagerly hoping that no one would bother her for the rest of the day so she could get it done as soon as possible.
After a few hours of replicating pieces of the aluminum model with cobalt she had almost finished forming the head of the hammer, but it was then that she realized there was an odd silence coming from outside the booth, accompanied from a familiar hum she didn’t quite like to hear. She turned to see the mobians in the street parting the way, parents tucking their kids away, others ducking into alleys to be out of the line of fire of the devilish thing- a Robotnik Robot, easily most common to the outer ring, where people were less likely to be able to defend themselves against the flying robots, and where the government didn’t care to check up on often. The white and black robot hovered off the ground, it’s one beady red ‘eye’ shooting off a beam that it used to scan the crowd. This was normal- it was looking for someone, maybe a citizen had gotten ballsy and kicked one and the Doctor wanted his revenge. It wasn’t as much of revenge as it was an excuse to spill some blood though, she supposed. What she didn’t find normal was when it stopped on her. She hissed in pain and shielded her eyes at the sudden bright light of the robot scanning her.
Subject: Amy Rose
It spoke emotionlessly and Amy froze- what did that mean? Usually it just scanned subjects and moved on- why had it said her name?
Amy Rose, you are the last Mobian in contact with Project Shadow, reveal his whereabouts immediately.
What? Amy shrunk back a bit and found herself grabbing the aluminum hammer, it might fall apart if she used it, but she would still have all the pieces at least.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Amy shouted.
Amy Rose, reveal the whereabouts of Project Shadow.
It repeated with no care for her testimony.
“I don’t know about any ‘Project Shadow’!” Amy shouted again, angrier this time, desperate for the robot to hear her and give up.
Amy Rose will be: Terminated.
She gasped as the robot came shooting towards her, eye beginning to shine as if it were ready to hit her with a terrible blast. In a moment of adrenaline, she spun on her toes and lifted the hammer with both hands. By the time she’d made it all the way back around again, she swung as hard as she could, and BANG- home run.
The Robotnik Robot went flying back out into the street as she followed through and the hammer poised back up behind her head again. It’s white body clanked to the ground and skidded, creating a horrible screeching noise before thunking against the wall of the building opposite of her and powering down. Amy breathed heavily in fear as she lowered the hammer and dropped it to the ground, the reality of the situation coming back to her senses as the mobians in the street slowly stopped staring at her and began carrying on with their day. A couple kids scrambled to tear the broken robot apart for parts, and she clutched a hand over her chest.
What. Was. That.
She had never, never in a million years, ever been targeted by Robotnik robot. At first she thought it might’ve been because he had found out Tails had used to work here- but Tails was no ‘Project Shadow’ unless he had suddenly changed drastically in the last twenty four hours. It seemed that ‘Myst’ was her only viable culprit for the ‘Project Shadow’. Amy picked up the aluminum hammer off the floor and placed it back on her work desk, amazed it hadn’t fallen to pieces like she’d thought it would. She sat back down on her stool and pulled out her ProjScreen.
Her first search was ‘Project Shadow’
The web showed it as nothing more than some Projection vlog channel of a kid who had no more than ten subscribers.
She looked up ‘Robotnik Project Shadow’
Same kid as before, except it seemed he had made a video ranting about the Doctor, seemed like it might be amusing, just not right now.
She tried ‘White Cyborg Arms’
Most of what came up we’re just arms taken from androids modeled after white colored mobians- cats seemed to be the most common, though she also saw what appeared to be a bird- and a few were actually pictures of Mobians with white cyborg arms, but none of them were what she had looked at only a few days ago.
Then ‘Cloaked Cyborg’
And now she was getting somewhere. The first article that came up was from about two months ago, and the headline read ‘Blue Blur goes head to head once more with the Cloaked Cyborg’ she clicked on it and was met with a gut wrenching picture.
It was the Blue Blur, just as handsome as everyone claimed, right in the middle of kicking her familiar mysterious customer in the cyborg arms with his cyborg legs, through the shadow of the hood he wore she saw the gleam of clenched teeth, it seemed that his shoes were skidding on the ground as well. Something told her he would have flown into a wall right after this picture. Her stomach churned- the man she had met did not seem deserving of this treatment, but then again, she hardly knew him. What had he done to get to that? She read the article quickly, the most she got out of it was that the people were lucky to have the Blue Blur to save them from wrong doers like the Cloaked Cyborg- but it still didn’t tell her what he had done. Clearly he had some sort of connection with Robotnik, she was almost one hundred percent sure that it was the doctor himself who had made ‘Myst’ those arms now. He had also apparently done something to get on the Blur’s bad side, and by extension Tails, which meant that it was good she never showed Tails the arm, but bad that she’d let a fair amount about Tails slip to ‘Myst’. Amy groaned and powered down the ProjScreen. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of all this. She didn’t like that she couldn’t find what ‘Myst’ had done anywhere on the web, but a part of her felt like she was betraying Tails by not immediately contacting him to tell him what had happened. Her unease swirled in her mind as she clenched her hands into fists in her lap. For now, it seemed that it might be best to just not say anything at all. She didn’t have to lie to Tails if she just didn’t talk to him, and with any luck, ‘Myst’ would not reappear at her booth anytime soon. She felt like she was trapped in a web, but all she could do was toss the ProjScreen to the top of her table and start working on the hammer once more.

~Divinities~
Our story begins in a lonely forest where birds sing happily and plant life thrives. the sun has just set with the moon taking its place covering the earth in its silvery light. The stars covering the sky with their white light. The sky itself shone of dark purples and blues.
It had been the a very beautiful night for mobians across the globe but tonight we focus on the lonely forest.
Where the moon seems to have focused its light in a small opening between the trees. It’s light covered the grass as it began to glow a faint white. the light only grew stronger and speks of white magic began to float from the ground into the sky. From this light a form began to appear. The magic fading from the grass and surrounding this delicate form.
The light slowly vanished revealing a young hedgehog boy. His body wrapped in a teal and white kimono. He had soft ivory fur and quills that laid over his shoulder and on the grass  . He laid on the grass as if he was in a deep sleep. Not a creature or force of nature dared to disturb him.
He was truly a beautiful sight to behold, as if an angel and graced the land with its presence.
The young boy began to stir. Slowly opening his golden colored eyes.
He lazily pushed himself up and looked around. confusion lacing his face.
“Wh-what?” he said in a soft and quiet voice. He held his hand close to his heart, tears threatening to fall from the panic he felt grabbing a hold on his chest making it hard to breathe. Suddenly both hands were around his chest. His knee’s close to his chest.
Little did he know blue magic began to illuminate from the ground, surrounding him
*crack*
The magic disappeared as he whipped his head around. someone had stepped on a branch. Another hedgehog with black fur. The boy could hardly see him hiding in the shadow.
But he was there.
They shared eye contact for a moment until he looked behind the ivory hedgehog and instantly turned to shadow and disappeared.
The young boy confused to no end looked behind him and saw yet again two hedgehogs. a young azure and and older looking black one. The black one had red stripes on certain parts of his body and he wore straps holding a satchel on one side and a gun on the other.
The blue hedgehog wore red sneakers and a light blue and white scarf.
The silver hedgehog cowered beneath them by instinct alone.
Although, truly the white hedgehog felt safe not only because they looked at him with a sense of worry and compassion.
But something deep inside
Something told him
In his very core
that he could trust them
That this was only the beginning
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 2 Eh? im not a girl!!
a blue hedgehog wearing red sneakers, white gloves and a blue scarf,
A black hedgehog with red stripes who wore red rocket shoes and a belt holding a satchel on one side and a gun
Walked side by side in a lonely forest. The sun had just set leaving the moons out and a cool nightly breeze blowing through thier quills. I seems as if they were in the middle of a conversation
“So, you felt it to, something or…someone calling to you?” He blue one asked
“Yes” she ebony one replied
“But what could it be? The chaos emeralds maybe?” The blue on said
“No,  the chaos emeralds have never called to any of us before why now? Its just illogical” the black one replied frustrated
“…,maybe somethings up…like something really bad” the blue one answered
“No, and the emeralds are all safe on angel island and we are heading in the opposite direction. if anyone you should know this faker!” the ebony one said
“Eh….yeah ok you got me there shadow , I have no ide-“
the two boys stopped in thier tracks.
Suddenly a bright light illimuminated the sky’s ahead of them but vanished just as quickly as is appeared.
But then
A cold feeling clenched thier hearts,
the blue one fell on his hands and knees clutching his heart.shadow rushed over to him, the cold feeling fading from his own chest.
“Sonic!” He yelled
“I-im fine, it just..,startled me” Sonic said out of breath
“What was that?” Shadow asked helping Sonic up but he noticed something, under Sonics scarf. Shadow only saw a glimpse so he wasn’t sure but he could’ve sworn he saw a scar
“I-i think whatever calling us is in trouble” sonic said
“Then we should hurry” shadow replied
“Race ya!” Sonic said before speedin off. Shadow activated his rockets boots to follow sonic but byethe time he caught up sonic was no longer running. He stopped by a clearing where a white hedgehog wrapped in a silky blue and white kimono lay on the ground. He seemed to be looking behind him at...something…a shadow but It seemed to notice shadow and sonic, then disappeared.
The white hedgehog finnaly noticed sonic and shadow and immediately became frightened.
“H-hey you dont need to be scared of us” sonic comforted
“We’re here to help” he encouraged
The white hedgehog put his hand on the ground and raised it back up as blue energy engulfed it and  parts of the ground began to glow the same color and raised from the ground.
“Heeeeey, buddy I promise w-were not here to hurt you” sonic stated
“H-how do I know that!” The white one stressed
“Uuuhh” sonic scratched his head in thought. Shadow stepped up
“You feel it too dont you? Your the one who called us here!” He said
“Wha-no?!” The white one said “b-but I d-do feel…something…”
“Ok, so we can all agree that something called us together. So can u put the big rocks down now please?” Sonic said
“O-okay” the white one said moving his hand down thus the flaoting rocks were set down on the ground
“Phew, ok so what’s your name miss?” Sonic asked
“Miss?!” The white hedgehog yelled confused
“I-im not a girl!!!” He continued to explain. Shadow hit sonics side with his elbow
“Hey! ok ok, sorry I just saw the kimono and-“
“K-kimono, whats that?” The still unnamed hedgehog asked
“The dress you are wearing” shadow said
“I-im not” the white hedgehog finally took a look at himself and was shocked. He didn’t remember ever putting this on. where would he even have gotten something like this back…back home.
Where even was he?
“Anyways what is your name?” Sonic asked snapping the young white hedgehog out of his thoughts. He hesitated for a moment realizing, even if there was a chance these guys were lying to him telling them his name wouldn’t hurt
At least he hoped so
“S-s-sil…Silver….my-my name is silver” he said
“Cool, my name is sonic and this is shadow. What are you doing out here all alone?” Sonic said squatting down in front of silver with shadow standing behind
“I-i don’t know, I found s-some kind of glowing rock an-and ended up here…wherever here is?” Silver explained
sonic perked up “Oh well your in luck, were close to emerald city you ca-“
“Wait emerald city still standing?!!” Silver asked with desperation
“What do you mean” shadow asked
“Its was just destroyed, i barely escaped!!” Silver stated
“Noooo, its still here” sonic said
“B-but iblis destroyed it. Its gone a-and so I-is everyone e-else” silver said his voice getting quieter by the word. His eyes starting to water from he memory of his home being destroyed
“Who’s iblis?” sonic asked which made silver finally snap
“Who’s iblis?!?!? only the creature that’s been terrorizing all of mobius for over 200 years. Emerald city was the last place anyone had to go and now its gone!!!” Silver stressed, tears now falling down his face. He noticed this and buried his face into his hands.
Sonic stood and turned to shadow “I think we should take him back to my place. This iblis guy sounds like trouble”
“For once I agree with you faker, whoever iblis is, we cannot allow him to terrorize anyone else” shadow stated turning to the crying hedgehog. Sonic then crouched down again
“Hey silver you wanna come back to my place, I’ve got a couple of friends who can help us and we can figure out what’s going on” sonic asked
“Silver wiped his eyes and looked up at sonic “o-okay” silver began to stand but faltered when a sharp pain ran through his left leg. Sonic though was able to catch silver before he fell to the ground
“Agh!…I-i forgot, my legs sprained” silver said (ignore the wierd text something wierd happened here idk )
“Oh, well I can carry you no problem” sonic suggested
“N-no I can fly” silver said activating his powers as a light blue glow surrounded him and lifting his body of the ground but the glow quickly faded and sonic had to catch him again. It was as if on cue silvers stomach grumbled stating he was hungry.
“Nope…can’t fly, too weak” silver said leaning on sonic
“Well carrying it is” sonic said adjusting silver on his back. Shadow picked up a straight stick and pulled out a small roll of bandages from his satchel. Shadow then put the stick on silvers leg and wrapped the bandage around.
“That should be good enough until we can get you to a doctor” he said
“Th-thank you…both to you” silver said
“No problem, I’m sonic the hedgehog hero of mobius, I try and do everything I can so help people. Shadow here is my sidekick” sonic said. Shadow merely scoffed at the statement
“I am no ones sidekick faker!” He stated
Sonic chuckled “Whatever you say emo boy” sonic said running off

84. Sonic Super Special #2 - Brave New World
Tumblr media
Brave New World
Writer: Ken Penders Pencils: Ken Penders and Pat Spaziante Colors: Barry Grossman
We're in for a long one, guys! I don't think a single special issue so far has contained only one story within, but this issue is a bit special. It doesn't necessarily contain one cohesive story, but rather serves as a stage-setter for the comic's upcoming issues, addressing many smaller plot points and chronicling the first foray made back into Robotropolis after Robotnik's death.
The beginning already gives us a juicy tidbit even though it's merely a recap of Mobius' history - for the first time, we hear about Queen Acorn, Sally's mother! We don't know much about her yet, only that she's considered a casualty of war in the Great War against the Overlanders before Robotnik's takeover. After the recap finishes, we see what's happening in the present - the celebrations are over, and now the Freedom Fighters and all their affiliates are faced with the enormous task of attempting to restore Robotropolis back into its former glory as Mobotropolis.
Tumblr media
Woof, that looks bad. Remember this place isn't just polluted with all sorts of nasty industrial contaminants, but actual radioactive fallout as well (from when the bombs went off in the Mecha Madness special, if you recall). They decide to start with the former palace at the center of the city, but are quickly attacked by a Dynamac robot of the same kind as the one in StH #31.
Tumblr media
The robot grabs Hershey, Antoine, Bunnie, and Tails in its weird mechanical tentacles, but Sonic confuses it by running fast enough to create multiple images of himself, making it drop its prisoners. While the fight is going on, Rotor discovers Snively hiding behind a curtain and definitely not doing anything evil to control the robot. With Bunnie's help, they take down the robot and snag Snively in a net before he can get away.
Tumblr media
With the threat neutralized, Sally heads upstairs to see what her old home has become, having not seen it since she was only five years old. The shock of seeing her home in such a state is clearly overwhelming to her.
Tumblr media
The comic interrupts itself here unexpectedly to show us a map of Mobius - yes, the entire thing - but we're going to hold off on exploring that until the end so as not to interrupt the flow of the story. Sally begins divvying up various tasks to her Freedom Fighters to focus on the restoration of the city - things like running water, power, etc. - but Geoffrey is nowhere to be found. Turns out he's on a call with King Acorn, whose condition has apparently improved enough that despite his crystallization, he can speak and even give orders. It doesn't seem like his mental state is really in the best of shape, however…

See, this is the trouble with monarchy, guys. I feel like if he was anyone other than The Almighty King, his words would be dismissed as delusional and bordering on fearmongering, but because he is the king and Geoffrey is sworn to his service, Geoffrey actually appears to take his words seriously, even as Dr. Quack encourages the king to lie back down and rest.
Well, since Chuck is such a radical, let's check on what he's doing right now, shall we? As it turns out, the blast from the Ultimate Annihilator restored the free will of every roboticized Mobian when it wiped out their slavemaster. While the others have been taking care of business up above, Chuck has been looking after all the newly-freed roboticized folk. Now that they can think for themselves once again, however, they have a new problem - they all, of course, want their organic forms back, but Chuck has to break the news to them that that's not possible.
Tumblr media
Hey, who are those two blue hedgehog-looking dudes at the bottom of those panels? Jules and Bernie, Chuck calls them…
Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails are out on patrol, making sure the city is free of any more surprises like the Dynamac. They encounter a line of swatbots transporting materials into factories like usual, but they complete ignore the pair, causing them to speculate this is another contingency Robotnik had set up to continue without him in the case of his death. They're interrupted by a sudden cry for help, which they follow to its source.
Tumblr media
Sonic attempts to help Penelope get Arlo out of his pickle, but isn't quite strong enough, until suddenly one of the roboticized Mobians, a polar bear that Sonic and Tails recognize as Rudyard, arrives to lift the rubble off Arlo. Uncle Chuck shows up with more of the roboticized people, and then… introduces some familiar faces to him.
Tumblr media
Ouch.
Sonic races off in blind fury and grief, despite Jules attempting to explain to Sonic that they had asked Chuck to keep the secret from him, and Bernie sends Tails off after him to hopefully calm him down. Chuck in the meantime takes his entourage to speak to Sally, who happily welcomes them back to sentience, though they seem doubtful that things can't go back to being the way they were before.
On a cliff overlooking the city, Sonic rages as Tails arrives, furious that Uncle Chuck would keep such an important fact from his as his parents being alive. Apparently, he had told Sonic right at the beginning of the war that they were "casualties of war," something which I suppose technically rings true, though it was clearly interpreted to mean "dead" by Sonic. (Hey, is anyone else noticing a weird parallel between Sonic and Knuckles' family situations right now?) Tails reasons with him that even if he had known his parents were alive, that wouldn't have necessarily made things easier for him to bear, as Sally knew her father was alive and it ate her up inside. This cheers Sonic somewhat, the thought that Uncle Chuck only did what he did to protect Sonic because he cares for him, and together they head back into the city.
That evening, Sally is sitting and watching over the work her people are doing and remarking to Nicole that it would perhaps be easier to abandon the city and rebuild elsewhere, and as Nicole reassures her who shows up to agree with the computer but Geoffrey? He sits next to her to chat, but Sally notices his attitude and finally speaks up about their potentially blossoming relationship.
Tumblr media
At least he takes it well! And at least Sally is finally moving on to someone more her age… Of course, at that moment Sonic shows up, and all he sees is Geoffrey acting like he's about to kiss Sally, so naturally he tackles him to the ground and they each begin attempting to tear the other to shreds in a jealous rage. Sally is for some reason not happy with this turn of events at all, so she gets Bunnie and Antoine to hose them down with a high-powered fire hose, and forces them to shake hands while they glare at each other and whisper through clenched teeth a promise of a later rematch. These two have a really healthy relationship, I feel!
That night, Sally uses Nicole as a sort of video call portal to her father, and we find out that apparently, she's not the one really issuing all the orders here - instead, her father is relaying commands to her that she then carries out under the guise of her own leadership. She's incredibly uncertain about the ethics of lying to her friends about the situation, even though Nicole reminds her it isn't the first time she kept secrets (referring to her secret about Knuckles), and she falls asleep alone and lonely.
The next day, Uncle Chuck hits her with some rather shocking news about the roboticized citizens.
Tumblr media
It seems maybe they aren't ready to rejoin society yet after all, unfortunately. The issue ends with one last note on Snively - he's been sent to the Devil's Gulag, which is apparently being run in the same way that Winterhold runs its prison system, with prisoners stranded in their cells on the island and guards only coming to check on them and provide food and water once a week. Geez, man, aren't the people running this thing supposed to be the good guys? That seems incredibly inhumane… Snively isn't pleased with his new living situation at all, and vows quietly from within his own cell to strike back when the time is right. On a side note, we actually see the exact same sign that I pointed out all the way back in StH#18, the one at the entrance to Robotropolis. It's been changed for the new situation, with the "R" in Robotropolis crossed out in favor of an "M", the population of evil doctors changed to 0, and the "0 living beings" changed to "many living beings," which is honestly a really cute way for them to take back their own land. The bit mentioning how many robots there are is unchanged however, which means we really are dealing with over four million roboticized citizens recently having regained their minds and wills. Guess we'll see how that plays out in the future…
Okay, time to take a look at this map of Mobius we've been provided!
Tumblr media
I always found it rather funny when fictional planets have to set themselves up to look vaguely like Earth. The Sonic games did it, Steven Universe did it, it's a strangely common trope. I went ahead and checked the scale provided, and my earlier statements about Mobius as a planet being comparable to Earth hold true; it's about the same size as our own planet. As you can see, almost everything relevant takes place in Not-North-America, with Mobotropolis and Knothole being situated in a general area analogous to Texas or perhaps Oklahoma. A lot of the noted areas in the legend are just references to old issues, but some are quite interesting. For example, the Floating Island apparently takes a sinusoidal orbit around the planet - it probably looks a bit less dramatic than that considering this appears to be a Mercator projection map (which means that the size of landmasses further from the equator are inflated), so the path is probably much less curved than it appears here. Quite interestingly, there's a section on the east coast of Not-North-America labeled "Overlander Territory" - we knew already about the Great War between the Mobians and the Overlanders, but now we actually get to see where they've apparently been residing this entire time. There's a few locations labeled for places we haven't seen yet (I'm not sure if this is because they were planning ahead for future issues, or if it's because this issue, despite chronologically taking place now, was published later), such as the Mysterious Cat Country and the Kingdom of Mercia, but the one that stands out most to me is the "lethal radioactive zone" located in the equivalent of modern-day Mongolia. There's no note yet on what exactly caused this area to be lethally radioactive, and I genuinely can't remember if it's addressed specifically in future issues, so I guess we'll just have to see!

Glaciality Chapter 4: "Partners"
Cassidy agressively dragged Slush down the vast hallway by the arm with a soft growl. The woman couldn't stand children, her boss knew this, and yet here she was stuck working with them anyways!
"Come on move it already!" She exclaimed as she yanked at the small canine's arm, causing Slush to yelp.
"Would you quit with the tugging already? I'm going as fast as my legs can carry me!" Slush snarled in response, lightly glaring up at the head nurse with disgust.
"Do you want to get shocked again, brat?"
Slush clenched her jaw, deciding to not even dignify the woman with a response. The husky averted her gaze to the shiny white tiles below her feet, now seeing the ice that remained coated over parts of her body.
'That's never happened before...'
She thought to herself with a soft sigh.
'Guess I got more stressed out than I thought.'
Her train of thought was broken by another tug from Cassidy.
"Go in here. Hurry up." The woman shoved Slush into a small closet like room, that was dimly lit by a single light bulb. Slush folded an ear before looking toward the woman with a confused look. "Put on those clothes there, quickly."
"It's...a little big don'tcha think?" Slush asked as her eyes settled on the orange and white t-shirt along with matching orange pants that was neatly hung up on the wall.
"Just put it on and quit asking questions!"
Slush scoffed as she glanced back at the suit once more. She shook her head lightly as she began to remove her hospital gown.
'Really, orange? What am I, a prisoner? I mean at least it's not yellow...but still couldn't they have picked purple or something?'
She reached out for the shirt, only to come into contact with a rather thin and scratchy material causing her fur to rise as she pulled her hand away in disgust.
'Ick...that feels ugly.'
"256 would you hurry it up already?"
"I'm going I'm going." She remarked as she reached for the shirt once more, taking it off it's hanger before putting it on.
Once she got it on straight, the shirt hung down to just above her knees. She then reached for the pants and attempted to put them on as well, but the pant legs practically covered her feet entirely, and they felt as if they were threatning to slide off at any moment.
"I'm sorry ma'am but these are way to big." Slush opened the door of the closet before looking up at Cassidy who clearly didn't care.
"Too bad. You'll just have to work with it." She reached over and grabbed Slush by the arm once more before dragging her off yet again.
"Seriously?" Slush stumbled and tripped over the pant legs, causing them to nearly fall off of her but she caught them by the waist using her free hand. "You knew I was leaving, so why didn't you have anything prepared?"
"We don't have anything in your size runt, you're only about 2'0", and most mobian huskies are at least 3'2" by your age. I honestly thought you were 6 by your height alone." Cassidy said in a snarky tone before laughing.
Slush's ears pinned back as she let out a small snort in response.
'When I grow some more, we'll see who the real runt will be.'
Slush remained silent as Cassidy continued to drag her along, only letting out a small gasp upon seeing a large group of children up ahead, around 100 or so that were beginning to line up against the wall.
"What's going on?" Slush asked.
"This is where you will line up, and then you'll fill into the assembly hall." Cassidy responded. "255, 257 raise your hands."
A parrot and a lamb who were standing by one another reluctantly raised their hands.
"What for?"
"You're going to be paired up." Cassidy began to push Slush toward the two creatures. "Now go stand between those two."
"Uh...alright?" Slush folded an ear before reluctantly making her way to the other two children with their hands up. The lamb and parrot made a bit of space for her to stand between in response as they put their hands down. "What does she mean by paired up?" Slush asked in a quiet whisper.
"From what I understand, these people have designated us some kind of work partner. Not so sure what happens next." The female parrot whispered softly.
'Work...partner? Why would we need that?'
Slush thought to herself as the line began to move into the assembly hall.
"Alright kids, you are to sit in order starting from the front row to the back once you enter the dome of the assembly hall." One of the facility staff called out over an intercom. "Do not get out of order, and do not disobey instructions. There will be consequences for disobedience. All questions will be answered by the speaker before the pairing session begins."
Slush glanced around as they slowly filled into the assembly hall, the ceiling was a large glass dome and snow could be seen falling and sliding off the outside of it. The wind from the storm outside could be heard ever so slightly as it whipped its way around the building. She then turned her attention to the red velvet theater-chairs that were lined up in various rows. The bottom half of the hall could hold up to 350 people, and the upper floor of the hall seemed like it could easily hold another group of 300 people.
Once all the children settled into their seats, the lights of the hall dimmed slightly as what seemed to be G.U.N. soldiers shut the doors of the hall. Two soldiers stood at every exit door, and about 10 more stood at the foot of the stage as the stage lights came on.
Pure silence fell across the room as a male cougar made his way to the oak podium that sat in the center of the stage, holding a few notecards in his hands as well as a tablet of sorts. He laid the tablet on the podium before straightening his cards, looking up at the crowd of young children with his vibrant Amethyst eyes.
"Good evening children," the cougar began. "Welcome to the Whispervale Sanctuary for Gifted Children of Wildelynn, or The W.S.G.C.W. for short. You shall all refer to me as Headmaster Kanjiro." The cougar glanced down at his cards, flipping one of them over before looking up at the children again.
"I am certian you all are disoriented and confused as to why you are here, so I will be answering a few questions before we pair you with your statistically chosen partners. Please place your hands on the of your identification plates found on your collars if you have a question. If I call your number, keep your hand on your identification plate until a microphone is passed to you. Do not speak unless you are selected please, and I'd suggest you be respectful if you know what is good for you."
A majority of the children lifted their hands to the metal plates found on their necks as Kanjiro glanced down at his tablet. The tablet appeared to have a map of the theater, and the children who had their hands to their plates could be seen as small red dots on the map.
"161. Your question please." A microphone was passed to a male eagle owl.
"Why are we here?"
"As we do annually, we select 650 children that are age 10, that have promising abilities to be taken into this facility. Due to Wildelynn's rising crime rates, we plan to make better officers for the city. Each and every one of you show promising abilities that could prove to be useful in lowering the crimerate of the city." He glanced down at his tablet once more. "427."
"Why do you only pick 10 year olds? Why not teenagers or adults?"
"You are at the perfect age, any younger than 10 children tend to be immature and difficult to manage. Any older, such as a pre-teen or teenager tends to be rebellious, and you are at such an age where we can easily put a stop to that rebellious stage before it starts. As for adults, although they can still learn, it often takes longer for them to grasp information and their bodies aren't as agile." He glanced down at his tablet before setting his gaze upon Slush. "256."
"But aren't many adults already going through police and military training? And aren't their laws against kids working?" Slush asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, but as stated before they learn slower and their bodies aren't as agile. We can train your body to do things in your youthful state, which will grant you exceptional flexibility and durability as you get older. And yes, you are correct. But the first 5 years you will spend here will involve vigorous training. Once you turn 16, you will begin regular patrolling. Given that you survive the first 5 years." The cougars face darkened slightly, his tone becoming rather grim.
'Survive? What exactly is he trying to say here?'
Slush thought to herself.
"421."
"Will we ever get to see our families again?"
"No. You belong to the government now, your parents have no custody over you, nor any say in what we do to you starting from the moment you set foot in this place. You will never see them again, unless they are the victims or perpetrators of a crime."
Many of the children became restless at this statement. Many, including Slush were already missing their families as it was, but to be told that they would never see their families again was just soul crushing to say the least.
'So...Dr. Emerson wasn't lying about that. I'm never going to see Dad, or Merci ever again. I can't even visit mom in White Acropolis either...and she'll never know why.'
Slush's eyes became covered in blue and white spirals as she cried lightly, as did many other children.
"332."
"Why are we reffered to as numbers instead of our names?"
"Names are useless here. You are not citizens, but subjects, data. Nothing more. 36 your question please."
"Why were we specifically selected?"
"As stated previously, you show the most promise out of all of Wildelynn's children. A good handful of you, I'm certian will be promoted to Trainee's for G.U.N." he looked down at his tablet once more. "29."
"When you mentioned if we survived...what did you mean sir?"
"The training regimen is not easy. It will be difficult and is adjusted to each of your needs. Some will breeze through it, others may die trying. And if the second outcome occurs, then and only then would you be reunited with your families."
"That's not fair!"
"You didn't even give any of us a choice to be here!"
"I want to go home!"
"I hate this place!"
Many children began to scream in disbelief, some beginning to activate their powers out of anguish.
"I'd suggest you sit back down and remain silent." Kanjiro said with a flat tone as he glared at those who were beginning to rise from their seats. Slush was not one of them, but she stared down Kanjiro as her blue spirals swirled rather violently over her eyes.
The children seemingly ignored the command, until their collars let off a harsh shock, causing them all to fall back into their seats with an outcry as burn marks formed on their necks, around the collars.
"I warned you. Do not make me do it again. Let that be a lesson to all of you." The Headmaster growled, "We have no time for such behavior." He straightened his cards once more before looking back at his cards. "That will be all the questions I will be taking. When I call your initals and plate number, you are to come up on stage, greet one another, and then follow an associate to your temporary rooms. You will have 3 days of team building exercises to get acquainted with one another before your G.U.N. fosters arrive. They will instruct you further."
The children moved slightly in their seats, whispering amongst themselves as they begrudgingly waited for their ID's to be called.
"R.T.S. 150, you are paired with P.E.Y. 500. X.E.Z. 10, paired with U.I.R. 12..."
***
Slush had her eyes focused on the snow fall that could be seen up above. The headmaster seemed to be taking ages to list off the names and frankly she was getting quite bored. It felt like she had been waiting over an hour, maybe even two and yet he hadn't seemed to even be halfway through all the kids just yet.
"V.A.V. 587, you are paired with S.L.I. 256."
Slush's ears twitched before she looked toward the stage with wide eyes.
"You'd better go..." the children around Slush whispered softly. "Hope you get someone nice."
"Uh...thanks?" Slush rose from her seat, lightly tapping her fingers together as she made her way to the stage. The canine could have sworn that she felt everyone's eyes on her at that moment...and honestly it was quite scary least to say.
'Oh gosh...'
She thought as her eyes focused on a navy blue Belgian Sheepdog that was making her way to the stage. Her fuchsia eyes darting around in fear as her ears were folded flat against her head.
The Sheepdog made her way onto the stage, walked up to Slush and simply gave a small wave before glancing back toward the crowd. Slush glanced back at the crowd as well before gently taking her new partner's hand, causing the other pup to jump lightly in suprise. The canine gazed at Slush with a confused look, she was clearly afraid.
"Come on, we gotta go to the staff..." Slush whispered softly.
"O-okay..." The other pup responded before being guided by Slush to the staff member. From there the two were guided to a room labeled with their ID's.
"In here kids. You'll be notified for dinner, but you are not allowed out of this room until then." A staff member said before closing the door once they were both inside.
Their room was quite bland, only consisting of white and black colors, almost as plain as the ward. The walls were painted white, and the carpet seemed to be pitch black. There were two beds which laid against the walls of the room, they had black comforters, white sheets and white pillows and looked rather stiff. There was nothing else within the room.
The girls silently chose a bed, Slush heading for the one on the right, the other pup for the left. They sat in silence for a moment before Slush finally decided to break the silence.
"So...what's your name?"
"Uh..." The sheepdog looked up at Slush, her ears pinning back. "Vitality...Vitality Valoore..." she glanced away. "And you?"
"Slush Icydra." Slush smiled softly.
The two sat in silence once more for a few minutes.
"I-I'm scared." Vitality managed to choke out, tears forming in her eyes.
"Me too..." Slush's ears pinned back as she looked down at her hands.
"R-really?"
"Yeah...I don't know what to expect."
"I just don't understand why they are doing something like this."
"Me either honestly...it makes no sense to me."
"D-do you...do you think we will make it Slush?"
"Make it?"
"Survive I mean..."
Slush remained silent for a moment, lightly rubbing her hands together.
"Maybe. I don't know."
Vitality covered her eyes with a small whine in response.
"But, that doesn't mean we shouldn't try." The husky said as she glanced up at her companion. Vitality's ear flicked as she removed her hands from her face. "If we try hard enough, if we learn enough...maybe just maybe we can get out of this situation."
"You really think so..?"
"Again...I don't know. But it's worth a shot. Maybe when we get older, they won't be as strict with us. But I really don't know at the moment."
"That would be nice..."
"Yeah."
"Slush?"
"Hm?"
"I know that we just met, but...is there any chance I can get a hug from you? I...I just really need one."
"Yeah, of course." Slush rose up from her bed and began to walk toward Vitality, who met her halfway to the center of the room. Slush wrapped her arms around Vitality into a small hug. "It'll be okay. We just have to work together..."
"Right..."

Chapter 25 - Caught
No matter how hard she banged on the glass separating her from the outside room, it neither budged nor drew the attention of those around her.  Her arms were heavy and thick cords restrained her every movement, pumping a strange purple liquid into her veins that made her head foggy and her legs wobble. The room outside the tube was filled with massive electrical wires and giant, roaring machines at every corner, all connected to a bulky computer directly in front of her.  The screen displayed a collection of graphs and numbers and outputs that made no sense to her, no matter how she looked at them.  The heavier she felt, the blurrier her vision became, and the harder the screen was to read.
She was tired and groggy and confused and could barely comprehend anything she was looking at, beating weakly against the glass until her fist slid helplessly down to her side.  Her body was giving out on her.  The large, round man at the computer in front of her finally turned her way, goggles obscuring the sharp, peering eyes behind them, and it was all she could do to keep her eyes open long enough to study him, study his shape, remember his face… in case she ever escaped.
As she was dragged relentlessly to the darkness of her subconscious, the faraway sounds of explosions and furious growls echoed through the open doorway.  Metal walls creaked and collapsed in on themselves, drawing the man’s attention away from his experiment.   Alarms blared frantically as electricity zapped and snapped through the base, the roar of a tornado tearing through the facility caused a panic the small hedgehog could only mildly react to.  The searing heat reached her even inside the tube and as the man ran out, panicking, screaming wildly, she knew she likely wouldn’t ever see him again.
She didn’t want to be left alone.  Even if it was some mad doctor, something about the heat felt so much worse, so much more dangerous.  Something that would destroy her, rather than simply use her for her powers. She had to escape, she had to break free, she had to…
Itara stared up at the strange red robot for some time when she noticed him.  He looked as though he were waiting for an answer to something, some question she never heard.  She wasn’t even sure she wanted to know what it was, either.  She shook the images from her head and glanced around before returning her gaze to the tall red robot.  Zero, his name was, she remembered that much, at least.  But she didn’t know anything else about him.
She didn’t know where he stood, nor who or what he was, he was a complete wild card and she didn’t like it.  The only thing she knew for sure at this moment was that he brought her to Robotnik and that was all she needed to know.  He brought her to Robotnik and put her in this situation. Whatever happened on this ship was his fault.
She took another step away from him and narrowed her eyes. She wanted nothing to do with him. Even if he promised not to harm her, or not to let harm befall her, he had already done that by bringing her here.
“T-Take me home.”
“I will do so once I have my answers,” the towering bot stated flatly.  “So, I’ll ask once more: who and what are you?”
Itara remained silent.  She wouldn’t answer that so easily.  She couldn’t, even if she wanted to.  “I’m Itara,” she frowned, “I’ve already told you my name once before. And I’m just a hedgehog.”
“I didn’t ask your name, and judging by the Doctor’s response to your appearance, it’s safe to assume you’re not an average hedgehog.” She winced, but remained silent. “So, for the final time, what are you?”
There was a distinct threat behind his voice, suggesting she answer if she didn’t want to get hurt.  It would have easily scared anyone, especially a child, and Itara briefly debated putting up an act to keep him from guessing otherwise.  She realized, however, how meaningless that would be and only glared.  She didn’t scare that easily and she wasn’t telling him her nature just so he could go tell Robotnik.  There was more at stake than her physical well-being if he did.
When he realized she had no intention of answering he narrowed his eyes and stood back up.  He towered over her, even more so than RK or Metal; if Itara had to guess he was even taller than the humans in their neighborhood.  But she spent the first two-hundred years of her life dealing with Iblis; a too-tall robot wasn’t about to shake her.
“Fine.  Then you can just remain here.  I’ll be back.”
With that, he turned on his heel and stormed out, letting the heavy, metal door slam shut tight behind him, leaving Itara to her thoughts once more.  She sighed heavily once he did and let her legs slide out from underneath her, dropping her head with them.
“…RK…”
Pulling her legs up against her chest, she wrapped her arms around them, resting her head against her knees and curling up as tightly as possible.  Brave of a face as she’d put on, she honestly was terrified.  Not because of Zero, or even because of Robotnik, but because of the familiarity of the situation.  Captured and powerless, left alone with no help within reach.  The last time she faced this…
She shook the images from her head again.  If she slipped back into that, escape truly would be impossible.  No, she had to stay focused.  RK and Metal wouldn’t be able to rescue her in this situation, not this close to Robotnik, and she doubted even Kipper would draw near him.  She had to at least escape the airship on her own.  Somehow.
If she could just get off the ship, if she could just get away, it would differ from the past.
Sighing heavily again, she lifted her head enough to glance around the room, studying it for any possible means of escape.  It wasn’t a cell, at least.  If anything, it looked like unused lab space, with bare walls and no windows.  Everything was covered in thick metallic plates, like everything of Robotnik’s always was, and there were no noticeable fixtures or indents.  Even the heavy door simply slid into the wall and nearly disappeared if she hadn’t already seen where it was.
But why was she in here instead of a cell?
She knew there had to be some, it was a large enough carrier and Robotnik always had some sort of holding cell, usually designed for a specific blue hedgehog.  Was it because they thought she was just a child and they didn’t expect she could escape? But surely Robotnik would recognize she’s no normal mobian and likely had some sort of power.  She doubted he knew she couldn’t control them, either.  So why such a lackluster response?  It was entirely unlike his responses to her in the previous timeline.  Then again, he had nothing to do with her creation in this timeline.  He had no idea who she was.
But what about the mobian girl?
She had still been kidnapped, likely still by Robotnik. Itara had wondered, many times, just how much Solaris reset, but the changes had all been so random in nature that she could never truly pinpoint it.  Nor could she exactly ask him.  But this was the first situation where she desperately needed to know what was different.
What did Robotnik know?
Had her changed appearance actually kept him from recognizing her?  Or was everything about her erased from his memories?  She needed to know.  Maybe she could use this unfortunate situation to learn more about the reset, learn what Robotnik knew compared to what she knew.  Shadow hadn’t recognized her at all and Robotnik only realized she wasn’t normal.  Maybe she could drag some answers out of him if she played her cards right.
But first she would need to get out of this room.  It was as good a way as any to keep her distracted, at least.  With a determined nod, Itara began her trek around the small room, running her hand over the walls, studying the corners, looking for any indication of either a ventilation system or exit.  She didn't find much, however, and continued over to the door, staring up at it.
Just like everything else, it stretched far above her head and any likely panel to open it was well beyond her reach.  There had to be one inside, she knew, but it didn't do her any good if she couldn't even reach it, let alone find it.  She took a couple steps back to get a better view of the wall beside it, having to strain to find the outline of a removable panel.  Standing on her toes, her fingers just barely brushed the bottom indent and try as she might, she could do nothing to remove it.  When that didn't work, she gave a couple small hops in hopes she could grab onto something before she landed, but that went nowhere fast, either.  As a final resort, she gave the wall a swift kick in an attempt to intimidate it into listening to her… but that only offered a sore foot as a reward.
Huffing angrily, she sat down, both to think and rub her foot.  She had to get that door open.  Removing her shoe, she gave it a hearty chuck at the panel, but it only clanked against the metal and fell.
“Stupid Sparky… why’d he have to go and fight Sonic?  He was supposed to be watching me.”
Metal wasn't the only one she blamed for her predicament.  In addition to the red robot that brought her there and Metal, she also blamed Sceira.  If she hadn't been there, if she hadn't been so annoying, Itara would have gone straight to the museum with Kipper and none of this would have happened.  She could have gotten the manuscripts and gotten out and still at least been with Kipper.
Why did she even save that annoying scorpion in the first place?  She could have just as easily left her there and she would have been an unfortunate loss during the attack, Itara couldn't have even been blamed for it.  It would have been the perfect opportunity to finally be rid of the pain in her neck.  So why did she save her?  Why did she risk so much for Sceira?
It was a stupid mistake.
She wouldn't make it again.
Growling and pulling her thrown shoe back on, Itara marched around the empty room once more, giving a final, thorough look around, before returning to the door again.  With a heavy sigh, she turned around and leaned against the wall, sliding down and curling up again.  She hadn't felt so alone in so long she'd forgotten how awful it was.  She had gotten so used to having Kipper or RK, or at least her phone with her, she felt lost without them.  Even her useless book would have been a comfort, she could at least write her thoughts down.  But she had nothing.
No powers, no book, no robots, no doll, nothing.
Before she could get too far back in her thoughts, however, the door slid open again, jolting her out of her head and causing a small screech of surprise to escape the tiny hedgehog.  The ghost of a smirk touched the robot’s face as Itara scrambled to her feet, glaring back at him and standing on the defensive.  He shook his head and motioned towards the hall, explaining, “We’ve got some things to discuss, come on.”
Itara remained in place, her spines prickling further at the potential threat, but no amount of prickling and glaring kept her feet on the ground as Zero walked over and picked her up by the back of the shirt again.  She attempted to wiggle out of his grasp, but found it just as useless as before and finally retreated back into her mind to devise a strategy.  She hated how little control she had over anything anymore.  Quietly begging with her powers, her dad, even her book, to just give her control, even briefly, at least let her know where the current path led, she whimpered to herself when no such assistance came.
She was utterly at the mercy of Dr. Robotnik and the strange robot named Zero.
As they continued down the hallway, Itara taking note of every detail she could along the way, the familiar sounds of electrical wires and whirring machinery echoed from every direction.  Itara had no doubt in her mind every inch of this ship was covered in some manner of defense that only Sonic’s – or Metal Sonic’s – speed could possibly out match. Escape would be difficult, but she already knew that going in.  Robotnik dealt with Sonic on a near-daily basis, he would have contingency plans for any number of situations, and her tiny, stumbling, powerless self would hold nothing to someone like Sonic or Tails.
She missed Kipper. She would have felt even a little better if the ghost doll was with her.
They came to another set of large, metallic, sliding double doors and Zero reached over to punch a short code into a pad beside it.  Itara did her best to remember it.  The doors slid open with a heavy vwom and revealed the expansive main control room of the carrier.  There were a number of screens and videos displayed on the grid-based window to the outside, showing several locations inside the carrier as well as the cities and hillsides around them.  The video feed of Spagonia was growing smaller and smaller every second, tying a knot in Itara's stomach.
From what she could tell, they weren't headed back towards Soleanna, either.  She had been hoping maybe they would return to the base RK had infiltrated before, at least putting her back on the ground and within running distance of home.  But there was no such luck.  In fact, they appeared to be heading the opposite direction.
In a grand chair in front of the screens, inputting some sort of command in the console, was the large, round man of her past, those same goggles glinting off the screens before him.  Dr. Robotnik.  Eggman.  The cause of almost every great calamity to befall the world in its many timelines.  The single-handed creator of the killer robots of the Metal Series.  And, in a time reset, the cause of Itara's own initial creation, as well as the release of Mephiles and Iblis.  His far-reaching genius was something to be feared, and often was, with few exceptions, though Itara was not one of them.  She had seen his penchant for destruction a number of times over, both incidental and purposeful, and she wanted nothing to do with him.
Zero strode over to the chair at the center of the console, announcing his presence, and Itara felt her panic turn to terror with the turn of the chair, the reveal of that grinning face and those shining goggles.  Once more, she could feel the peering eyes behind them and the inevitable destruction they always caused, and her body shuddered in response.  Even for someone like her, whose goal was once to see the destruction of humanity, whose physical body was only a container for something greater, the unstoppable need for power consistent in Robotnik’s actions was a terrifying ordeal to face.
With Zero’s release of her shirt and her placement back on solid ground, she slid back down into a sitting position and stared up at her captors, frozen, shaking. The two studied her before shifting their focus to one another.
“She refuses to answer any questions,” Zero explained, looking between the doctor and the small girl, a touch of suspicion in his tone as he explained, “it seems she’s quite afraid of you.”
A small grin spread across Robotnik’s face before he wiped it away again and leaned back, studying the little girl staring, horrified up at him, her bright green and purple eyes making him somewhat uncomfortable.  Shaking his head, he looked to Zero again, “Well, I can’t say I’m surprised.  I’ve explained what the mobians think of me, it’s not uncommon for the young ones to fear me.”  Something about the statement caught Itara’s attention as her previously flattened ears perked.  Turning back towards her, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, studying her, trying to understand her strange appearance.  “It’s okay, I won’t hurt you.  We just want to ask some questions.”
Something was off.  He was putting up a face, though Itara couldn’t imagine why.  He’d never been the type to act coy around children, he’d been the one who initiated her kidnapping, after all.  Why the façade?  Itara’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, her ears pinning back again as she unconsciously leaned further away.  But the shift in expression in the Doctor brought her attention to her own movements as she sat up straight again, studying him.  She couldn’t be so obvious, if she wanted to learn what he knew, she’d have to play the same game.  She had to join the act.
She shook her head slowly, shifting her expression back to one of concern as she stammered, “L-like what?”
“Well, for starters, what’s your name?”
The strain in Robotnik’s voice and the look of frustration on Zero’s face would have gotten a laugh, realizing just how ridiculous the situation was.  Only one of them was putting on no act and he was the most out of place.  Meanwhile, both she and Robotnik were hiding their own natures, for one reason or another, and would likely get nothing out of the interaction about to happen, yet Zero seemed to be the most frustrated over this.  She became curious of his goal, as it clearly wasn’t the same as Robotnik’s.  What was he looking for, that he thought only Robotnik could give?  Perhaps she would start there.
After a short back and forth between her and Robotnik, neither of them gaining anything, just as she suspected, Robotnik grew frustrated first.  He turned away, waving for Zero to take over the conversation, which he seemed all too happy to do.  Itara watched Robotnik turn back towards his computer to go back to monitoring whatever progress was happening before shifting her gaze to Zero, who seemed to be debating how to go about getting answers from the small mobian ‘child’.  If Itara had to guess, he was normally a shoot-first-ask-questions-later sort of guy and having to reign that back was putting him on edge, in addition to whatever other problem he was apparently dealing with.  She decided to ease up the act ever so slightly with him, wanting answers, herself.
“If you promise to take me home, I’ll tell you about my crystals,” she offered, but interrupted before they could respond by pointing to Zero, “but it has to be you, not him.”
Zero debated, but nodded, “fine, as I said before, I’ll take you home if you answer my questions, I have no intention of doing otherwise.”
Itara noticed the hitch in Robotnik’s face and shook her head, wanting to test the waters, “he does.  He doesn’t want to take me home.”
She watched Zero cast a long sideways glance towards the Doctor, studying both their expressions carefully until Robotnik waved the thought away. “Nonsense,” he argued, though refused to turn towards them and kept his sight on the computers, “I have no need to keep a child here.”  She needed to push this further.
“There,” Zero responded, looking to her again, “I’ll take you home, so answer the question: what are those crystals?”  Itara remained silent, looking cautiously between the two, stalling for time to come up with an answer.  They weren’t exactly easy to explain, and she didn’t want to give Robotnik any ideas, she had to deal with the situation carefully to avoid piquing his interest. But apparently, she remained quiet for too long and pushed the red robot a bit too far as she rather suddenly found the end of a glowing blue sword pointed in her direction, impatient blue eyes sparking behind them as he once again demanded, “answer the question.”
Itara jumped and scrambled further away, staring up at him with widened eyes. She still wasn’t even sure what the sword was made of and didn’t want to be on the receiving end of it.  “I-I-I don’t know!” she stammered, “they just… appear-show up sometimes!  Wh-when I’m upset!”
The answer drew Robotnik’s attention back as he turned towards them again, studying her and the angry bot.  “Are you the only one this happens to?”
Itara winced and looked away, the shining light of the sword still present in her peripheral.  That was a dangerous answer.  But what would be the best response?  “I… n-no, I…” her ears pinned back again, “m-my dad… could also do this but… he… he died… last year.”  The sword finally lowered and retreated into its hilt, giving her a moment to breathe, but it was short as Robotnik hummed, curious.
“Your dad, hm?”
The best lie was often sprinkled in with truth, she’d learned early on, but she doubted any amount of lie or truth would have kept Robotnik off her trail. She was caught the second he saw her. Perhaps she could have convinced someone else that she was just some kind of rare breed of mobian, but not Robotnik. She kept her eyesight off to the side, curling in on herself again, lost in thought about both her situation and now the mobian parents that had, in fact died.  She wasn’t sure how to respond anymore.
“I… I told you… so… take me home now,” she mumbled, only looking up enough to watch their responses.  Zero studied her before turning his gaze to Robotnik, but the doctor only kept his sight glued to her.
“We will, in due time,” Robotnik responded, “but that wasn’t the only question we had.”  Of course it wasn’t.  “What do you know about Solaris and Gaia?”  Itara’s ears pinned tightly against her head as she cast a wary glance towards him, trying to look as confused as possible.
“What… do you mean?  Solaris is… Soleanna’s Sun God, right?”  The frustration in her voice when she uttered his name caught even her off-guard, and Zero’s attention.
“That’s right, you’re from Soleanna, aren’t you?” Robotnik continued.
“I… m-maybe.”
“Well we can’t take you home if we don’t know where that is, after all.  In fact, why don’t you come put your address here in my console and we can talk on our way there,” he motioned towards the long, backlit keyboard spread out across the table, reaching up to pull the GPS up for her.
Itara hesitated, eventually shaking her head, “I said he could take me home, not you.”  Even if she had no intention of giving either of them her real address, she didn’t want Robotnik even knowing where she’d be dropped off.  He reached up and rubbed his chin, seeming to consider this before shrugging.
“Alright, alright, then let’s talk a bit more, about the monsters that attacked. Do you know what those were?” Itara shook her head.  Of course, she knew, but he didn’t need to know that. He continued once she did, “they were monsters created by Solaris and Gaia, two of the three main Gods of this world. Do you know the last one?”
Chaos.
Now that Itara looked up to the GPS, she could see their current location and heading.  They had gone west from Spagonia, apparently, across the desert.  They were headed over the ocean.  The destination was Station Square.  So Robotnik did know something, he was on the exact same path as her. But… how?  She had no further time to debate as the doctor turned to her once more.
“You look like you know, after all.  There’s more to you than just those crystals, aren’t there?”
“I…”
“So why were you at the university?”
“I… was just… on a field trip.  For school…”
“Is that so?”
“How…?”  Itara’s brows furrowed together in confusion, realizing what had struck her as odd before, “How did you… know about Solaris’ creations?”  No one should know what Solaris’ monsters looked like, no one but her. How did Robotnik know they were his? Robotnik remained silent, but grinned, and only then did Itara realize she gave herself away.  She shouldn’t have known.

Sonic Forces: Cosmic Illusions
Tumblr media
Death Egg Sentinels rampaged through the city, destroying buildings and hurting innocent civilians. Shadow the hedgehog had been sighted by the Resistance, and now that Sonic the hedgehog was with them, they could finally get to the bottom of why he was working for the mad Doctor. Most of the Resistance members were busy fighting off the armies of the evil doctor, while others were helping civilians. However, two people were investigating something else. Those  two people were Miles "Tails" Prower, and a version of Sonic the hedgehog from another dimension. Or timeline. Or whatever/whenever he's from.
Standing now in between several destroyed buildings was the smaller Sonic the hedgehog. Not seen as the same powerhouse as this dimension's, though still a good soldier during these times of need. He held a confrontational stance as Tails ran up behind him.
"Wait up, Sonic, I can't go as fast as you! Even if you're not the fastest Sonic here!" Tails whined, catching up to the smaller hedgehog. He panted, catching his breath as he looked back to the Azure hedgehog, who's were narrowed as he stood in front of a familiar dark figure.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the little pint sized hedgehog and his even weaker fox friend." Infinite said.
"You… You're that guy that was with Eggman in Green Hill!" Tails shouted.
"I suppose I am. The doctor did say something about you defeating his Egg Dragoon. No doubt you two were the ones I thought I sensed."
Sonic's fist clenched as he looked at Infinite's chest. The magenta gemstone he wore with such bravado was a sight all to familiar to him. He took a single step back, readying himself to jump at the jackal. He made his move, rushing forwards and jumping as high into the air as he could. However, this dimension seemed to have vastly different physics then that of his home. His jump couldn't reach the floating mobian. Not that it would have mattered much anyways, as he glided out of the way. He lowered himself in between Sonic and Tails before warping close to Tails in an instant. Tails shouted, as Infinite grabbed him by the throat. He was lifted upwards in Infinite's grasp.
"So, this is the sidekick of Sonic the hedgehog. Pathetic. Just like him." Infinite muttered in a threatening tone.
Sonic turned himself around and jumped before turning into a ball mid-air and revving up. When he hit the ground, he dashed towards Infinite at breakneck speed. Not that it mattered to Infinite. His own speed outmatched the Sonic of this dimension. He was more than capable of dodging this attack. He moved quickly to the let, Tails still in his grip. As Tails gasped for air, he got the sensation of lacking oxygen. Much faster than normally possible, almost as if they were being torn from his lungs forcefully. Infinite chuckled.
"Do you feel that? That breathless feeling? The cold embrace of death? It's terrifying isn't it? You should be thankful I'm merely giving you the sensation of suffocation. There are many, many other ways I could be killing you right now."
As Tails listened, his life actually began flashing before his eyes. His mind quickly traveled through his time on Westside Island, his first big adventure with Sonic, him facing the Egg walker, his time on the ARK, his time in space fighting the Metarex, Eggman's interstellar amusement park, the Lost Hex…. Everything was flashing before his eyes. Would this really be where he died?
As Sonic revved up another attack, Infinite spoke, "Oh… What's this? A fallen loved one? Hahahaha, how quaint."
With a single gesture, he threw Tails to Sonic, hitting him and knocking him down. Oxygen returned to Tails' lungs as the fox gasped for air. He surprisingly caught his breath quickly, almost as if he was never actually being choked in the first place. The both of them got to their feet as Infinite floated high into the air. Classic Sonic got into another battle stance, though, this time he was looking around for things he could use. Brute force wasn't something that was viable here. He needed strategy.
"Do the two of you want to know how Eggman was able to amass this army? How the likes of Zavok and Chaos joined our ranks despite being deceased? Why the brooding hedgehog decided to band together with the doctor?" Infinite monologued, offering an answer to the two.
Tails blinked for a second. Shadow was sighted in the city during this attack, and with Sonic here, they could at least capture him and try to get an answer out of him. Then again, Shadow's crafty and could escape. And from what Infinite was talking about earlier with letting Sonic live in their first encounter, he does seem to let his enemies go off easy, even though he could just kill them.
"I was kind of curious how you managed that. And you do seem like the kind of guy who likes telling everyone about his evil plans, so I'm all ears." Tails said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. A trait he began picking up from Sonic in recent times.
Infinite gave a light chuckle, "Oh,I'd suggest you speak to me with a lot more respect, child. After all, I'm about to bring back someone you never thought you'd see again…"
With the snap of his fingers, a purple and pink mist formed underneath Infinite's floating figure. Digital sparks began flickering around the mist as an entity began to form from the Ruby Mist. Sonic recognized the mist from his home dimension, back from the Titanic Monarch. Tails took precautions, ready for some past villain to come forth from the mist. However, his eyes widened when he began to see who it actually was.
Sonic did not recognize the entity, and could only guess that it was another villian from this universe. Though, they certainly didn't look like a villain. He heard Tails gasp as the figure began to make itself seen. He glanced back to Tails, expecting a look of horror. But he did not get that.
Instead, perched upon Tails' face was a look of disbelief. But not the type of disbelief after seeing a bad guy crawl up out of the rubble being convinced they were dead. No, this disbelief was… a very wide mixture of emotions. Sorrow. Regret. Hope. Love. And many more. To say Sonic was confused would be an understatement. Tials only managed to whisper one word, and one word alone out of astonishment.
"Cosmo…?"
Indeed, standing before the two of them was the green haired girl from space. The very same one that died by Tails' hand. Her blue eyes lit up in the fog. She blinked a few times, rubbing the mist out of her eyes, though she still seemed to be flickering in glitches, "Tails…? Is that you…?"
A drop of water was heard in Sonic's ear. He looked back to where it sounded and saw tears flowing down Tails' muzzle. Sonic grew defensive, looking back to the girl with a determined face, read to protect Tails if this girl mean him harm. Tails however, made a step forwards in front of Sonic, going past his defenses of him.
"Cosmo… Is it…. Is it really you…?" Tails muttered. This couldn't be real. This had to have been some sort of illusion. Cosmo's been dead for so long and Infinite just seemed to just bring her back from the dead.
"Yes, Tails… it's me." Cosmo said, stepping forwards form the mist. Tails broke down, falling to his hands and knees. He began crying and shouting at the top of his lungs.
"Oh, Cosmo, I'm so sorry! I-I didn't mean to shoot you! I didn't' want to do it! Everyone else forced me to! But I did it! I did it and I killed you!" Tails shouted. Sonic's eyes grew wide, looking back up to the green haired girl. She took a few more steps forwards, kneeling down next to him and lifting his his chin.
"Tails… You don't have to worry about that. I forgive you. I made you shoot me… And we're all alive because of it." he said, giving him the gentlest of smiles. The smile he loved so dearly. Tails sniffed before wrapping his arms around her and bawling into her chest. Within his tears of joy, he heard her heartbeat. She felt so soft. So warm. So real. This had to have been some sort of power of the Phantom Ruby. Could it alter reality? Could it bring back the dead? Could it have time travel properties? It didn't matter. None of it mattered. He had Cosmo in his hands, and for that he could never be more thankful.
Of everything Sonic had seen in this strange future dimension, this was by far the one he did not get. It was clear that Tails loved this girl, and that he did something bad to her, but what was it? He killed her? Why would he do such a thing? A lot of context was necessary for him. Though, he supposed that maybe it was worth asking for later on, just in case he and his friends would run into any similar characters in the future. In spite of the heartwarming moment, he looked back up at Infinite, who had not moved from his spot.
"How touching. A reunion of the dead." He said, in a deathly tone. Classic Sonic clenched his fists, ready to fight again. Maybe this Cosmo character could help them out in some way. Not that it would make a lot of sense why he could bring an ally to them. He glanced back down at her hugging Tails. Her face was visible to Sonic, which allowed him to see something shocking.
"Don't worry, Tails…" She said, her eyes opening wide to reveal they had turned from blue to red, "We'll be together forever… I promise."
She sported a toothy grin as she spoke. From her sleeve, a knife jotted out. Classic Sonic's eyes went wide. He was about to rush against her, to save Tails. But then something unexpected happened.
A bright flash of light shone next to them, and a good kick sent the both of them flying. Cosmo landed further than Tails did. Cosmo's red eyes and sharp teeth faded away, back to her original appearance. The both of them got up and looked at who had struck them. Standing before them was the all too familiar sight of Shadow the hedgehog.
"You!" Infinite shouted. Shadow merely humphed in his direction. Not far behind was the Sonic the hedgehog of this dimension, rushing forwards, stopping on a dime at the intersection of destroyed buildings.
"Shadow! I got here as fast as I co-" Sonic's eyes widened when he saw Cosmo laying on the floor not to far off from Tails
"Wait, Cosmo?!" He looked at her and then back up at Infinite. Thanks to Shadow's exposition earlier, he knew exactly what was going on. He growled at Infinite, "You!"
"Ah, yes, hello hedgehogs. I suppose you all know exactly what's going on?" Infinite said, with a smirk under his mask.
" don't have time for this." Shadow exclaimed. In a bright flash of light, he vanished.
Tails, completely surprised by everything that just happened quickly turned back to Cosmo, to make sure she was alright. As she was getting up, Shadow teleported right on top of her, his jet boot stomping on her chest. Tails' eyes widened.
"Cosmo!"
"Tai-" was the last thing Cosmo could say, reaching her hand out to him, before it fell. Her face went from complete horror to shocked and calmed. She ceased to move. A bright flash of light came from Shadow's shoe which firmly separated her life and now death. A burning hole lied there as Shadow removed his foot from her. He gave a hateful glance back to Infinite.
"Shadow!" Sonic shouted. The other Sonic's eyes widened, unsure how to take such violent actions from the black hedgehog. This universe's Sonic looked back up to Infinite with a hateful glare,"You're going to pay for this."
"Oh? Am I? And here I thought I was just reuniting a pair of lovers." Infinite said, fully knowing the dark twist he meant.
"I ought to grab you by your hair and beat you to the ground like I did before." Shadow threatened. Tails sat on his knees, tears falling from his eyes as he looked upon Cosmo's dead corpse.
"Well, that will be hard to do, now with the power of the Phantom Ruby. Besides, you no doubt will be having your own trouble." Infinite said.
"And what would that be?" Shadow said, completely expecting an onslaught of robots or more illusions by Infinite. What he got however, was much different.
Tails' teeth gritted together, a he looked on Shadow in anger. He shouted at the top of his lungs as he ran towards Shadow, straight up punching him in the face. This caught Shadow off guard to say the least. He stepped back from the recoil a bit before Tails tried continue his onslaught of anger.
"You killed her! She was here! She was alie! And you killed her!" Tails shouted, tears in his eyes.
Both Sonic's eyes widened, but only this dimension's sonic spoke, "Tails! No! You don't understand!"
Infinite chuckled, deciding that now was the time to take his leave. He zoomed off across the cityscape at breakneck pace. Shadow got a glance of this and shouted, "No! He's getting away!"
"I don't care who's getting away! You're going to pay for that! For killing Cosmo!" Tails shouted in rage, continuing his attempt at a beat down on Shadow., which might;ve done some damage if Shadow wasn't good at blocking.
"We don't have time for this!" Shadow shouts, as he deflected one of Tails' attacks and quickly karate chopped Tails' neck. Tails' eyes rolled into the back of his head, and dropped to the floor.
"Tails!" Sonic shouted. Both Sonic's ran up to Tails, checking up on him
"Relax. I only knocked him unconscious…" Shadow reassured. He observed how far Infinite got away. Had Tails not attacked him so suddenly, they might have actually been able to beat him.
The corpse of Cosmo began to deteriorate similarly to the Shadow replica Shadow had destroyed sparked Sonic to speak to Shadow, "You could've just said, 'Tails, look out, it's a trap!' you know. Didn't have to go and explode that illusion's chest in."
"He wouldn't have believed me for a second. Had I not intervened, she would've killed him." Shadow explained.
Sonic was about to say something to rebuttal Shadow, but he was stopped by his counterpart, who was nodding to signify Shadow was right. The taller hedgehog merely sighed, looking back to Tails. He picked him up and the three hedgehogs began walking back to base.
"You're explaining and apologizing to him when he wakes up."
"Understood."

Gear Foxx- Chapter 3
Don’t Repeal Net Neutrality!
“Were you trying to kill yourself, kid?”
“Er… is this a rhetorical question?” I asked.
Dr. Quack, Knothole’s lead physician, muttered angrily under his breath. He finished wrapping the cast around my leg before stating, “You got off pretty easy. But if you had kept running on that broken leg of yours, the last thing on your mind would be how painful it is.” He left the room for a moment, before bringing back a pair of crutches.
“Guh!” I breathed, getting to my feet with the crutches. Mina tried to help me, but I brushed her hand from my arm. “I’m fine,” I said, before asking, “So how long until this heals?”
“A few weeks, but if you want it to heal faster, I suggest not trying to walk for a while. The only reason I gave you those crutches is because we’re fresh out of wheelchairs,” the doctor pointed to the window, where I could see a few Mobians stuck in portable chairs.
“Good to know. Thanks doc,” I said, moving towards the door.
“Hey, kid!” Quack called after me, “Leave the heroics to Sonic! Otherwise you’ll just make my life harder!”
“Glad to know he cares about my well-being so much,” I muttered to Mina as we left.
Mina shrugged, “Well, you were the one to run around on a broken leg. I’m surprised you’re even still able to walk on it.”
“It was because of the brace I made,” I explained, “It held my bones in place long enough for me to get them fixed, but running on them didn’t really help.”
Mina silently stared at me, perhaps disturbed at how calmly I was taking the situation. She finally sighed, “Well, Doctor Quack is right. You should really leave the freedom fighting to Sonic.”
“And you should really not run to your death,” I interjected, thinking about Mina’s mad dash to rescue her mother. Her face flushed with anger.
“You’re the one who thought it was a good idea to go rescue her!”
“Yeah, but since Sonic’s right about everything, there’s no problem, right? Why don’t you go tell him how right he is?” I practically snarled.
“Fine! I will! And honestly, I don’t think I even care anymore if you try to get yourself killed whenever Robotnik attacks. Do what you want,” she stomped away, annoyed.
I watched her disappear into the large crowd of people flooding the small village. “Looks like I’m on my own again…,” I mumbled sadly.
I limped through the mass of Mobians, trying to find a good spot to rest. People were setting up tents, hundreds of them, to accommodate for the massive population- there just weren’t enough homes to go around.
I found a quiet corner, just a little ways away from Knothole, and rested my back up against a tree. I sighed, my mind still focused on my row with Mina. I didn’t want to get mad at her, but I needed some time to think, to process things. I needed to be alone, and getting Mina to avoid me was the best- the only- solution I could come up with.
“Sorry, Mina,” I grumbled to myself, before absorbing myself into my own thoughts.
A Human. A Fox. A Doctor. Another Doctor. A Hedgehog. A Foxx. A Mongoose. Mobians. A lab. Snapping electricity. A robot named George. A small village. A Chipmunk. A giant emerald. Project X. Armored guards. A burning city. A burning scar.
I lifted the hem of my shirt, revealing my brand once again. I ran my finger across it, wincing from the sharp sting that followed. The raw flesh was still tender.
I had been created, not born. I wasn’t ‘real’, per se. Then again, I did have the souls of two different individuals inside me. Were the souls now my own, or theirs?
Another question remained- Why was I created? The doctor said I was supposed to be “the ultimate soldier”, but was that the only reason? It’s not like I wanted to fight all those robots, I just…
I just wanted to help people.
Was that just another part of a programmed personality? Or was it my own? My head was swimming from the questions.
And of course, I couldn’t forget about where I was. I was in a world where Sonic the Hedgehog existed. And Dr. Eggman… they had called him Dr. Robotnik, hadn’t they? Kintobor backward is…
“If Dr. Robotnik is fighting Sonic, then does that mean Dr. Kintobor will be coming after me soon?” I thought.
No. He implanted a tracker in me, hadn’t he? If he wanted me, and if he was here, he would have done so already. I was safe- for now.
Back to the present situation. Some of what happened seemed familiar. I’m sure that the Human had read something like this in his comics before. If I can just remember… what did the Human read about?
Suddenly, the answer hit me. A flash of colors shot through my mind, as a smoking village captured my attention. The scene shifted to reveal a rogue AI, who was tormenting Mobians. The setting changed again, this time to missiles hitting a domed city. Again and again images flew in my head, only lasting a second or two as I recalled key events. A golden echidna. A hidden city. A roboticized scientist. A freed mad scientist. An empty suit of chainmail. A large egg-shaped aircraft. Invading aliens. A giant panda bear.  A blue emerald. Strange robots from another world. A destroyed universe.
I strained my mind for anything else, but failed. My vision was ragged, and I fought to control my breathing. I had to calm down. I bumped my head against the tree, staring up at its branches. Sunlight danced through the leaves, flooding the forest floor with a late afternoon gleam.
I knew some of what was going to happen, but beyond that, I couldn’t seem to remember much of anything else. Both the Human’s and the Fox’s memories were locked away from me, only snippets of information leaking out of the sealed chest of reminiscence. Why couldn’t I remember? And why was I even here? How did this world exist?
A low rumble made its way to my ears, piercing the silence like an arrow. I clicked my tongue with impatience.
“Ugh… I’m hungry,” I sighed.
Unfortunately, I was tired more than anything. Battling throughout the entire day, then thinking too hard about the situation I was in, was just too much for my body and mind. My eyelids slowly slid shut.
“At least, for now, I’m safe,” I thought, before falling asleep.
Now that I escaped Dr. Cain, what should I do?
It was this question that made me wake with a start, a cold sweat pouring down my back. The sun had retraced its steps in the sky, and my back was sore from being in the same position for so long. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, stretching.
What should I do? My mind drew a blank from this obvious question. What is my purpose? Do I even need one?
My stomach grumbled loudly. “Well, I know what I should do for the moment. But even before that…” I turned my attention back to Knothole. Hundreds of Mobians were walking here and there, grabbing lunch with friends or setting up more tents- apparently, it had continued through the night. I saw a familiar face speaking with an elderly woman. I got up slowly, placed my armpits on my crutches, and made my way to them.
The older woman had left by the time I got there, leaving Mina with three small children I hadn’t noticed before. She seemed to be telling them a story.
“...When suddenly, a giant robot appeared! Dr. Ro-butt-nik’s forces were attacking the city! The robot started firing at me, but I was able to sneak past it into a small alley. There I met- Wait, did I even meet anyone in the alleyway?” She seemed momentarily confused, but continued on, “Anyways, I was able to escape, and after making it through the alley I found a bunch of other people. We were about to escape the city when,” she paused dramatically, “More Shadow-bots attacked!”
The children gasped, completely enthralled with Mina’s story. I chuckled, stopping behind her. Neither she nor the kids saw me.
“We were completely surrounded! I thought that it was the end. What I didn’t expect was for Sonic the Hedgehog to come swiftly to our rescue! He tore all the robots apart before I even had time to blink!”
“You forgot to mention the part where I heroically tried to save you guys, but landed flat on my butt and looked like an idiot instead,” I said.
Mina turned her head so quickly I heard an audible crack. She rubbed her neck, moaning before asking, “What are you doing here?”
“Apologizing. Unless you’d like me to leave…?”
“Preferably the latter. But go on.”
“I didn’t mean to bring up what happened in the city, or get mad at you for no reason. I’m sorry for starting an argument,” I said truthfully.
Mina looked at me with a strange expression on her face. For a second I thought she hadn’t accepted my apology, but then she said, “You’re so weird, Gear.”
“Er… Okay?” I wasn’t really sure how to respond to this statement.
“Most people don’t like apologizing or admitting they’re wrong about anything, but you come right out and do it like it’s nothing.”
I stared at her, blinking rapidly, still not sure how to reply.
“I guess if I’m being perfectly honest, I was glad that we got into a fight. I wanted some time to think by myself. With everything that went on yesterday… It was all rather chaotic, wasn’t it?” She smiled before saying, “So I guess you didn’t really need to apologize… Though it was still nice to hear.”
“Heh… It’s funny, I started arguing for that exact same reason. I thought that you might stick close to me because of my leg,” I tapped my leg with one of my crutches, “I guess we’re both just a couple of hot-heads, huh?”
Mina laughed, shoving me to the side, “What are you talking about? You’re the one who started the argument!”
“What about the rest of the story, Ms. Mina?” one of the kids finally spoke up.
“Oh! Right, sorry,” she apologized, turning her attention back to the story, “Umm, let’s see… actually, Gear, do you want to tell your side of the story?”
“My side?” I asked.
“Yeah! Tell what you were doing when the robots started attacking, then tell how we met!”
“Um… sure, I guess. Ok,” I sat down on the ground in front of the children. They eyed me suspiciously, as if they didn’t think my story would be as good as Mina’s. “Alright, so, uh, I was in a really tall building when the Shadow-bots attacked. About as tall as that tree over there,” I said, pointing to a rather tall tree closer to the center of the village, “It was there that a large ‘bot fired at me! I dodged out of the way and...”
The sun lowered as I told my side of the story, up till the part where I met Mina, where she resumed her own story, while I added details and comments every now and then. Finally, the elderly woman came back.
“Thank you for watching the young ones for me, Mina. And who is your friend?” the woman smiled at me.
“This is Gear, Ms. Rosie,” Mina said. I waved, nodding. Rosie returned the gesture, before taking the kids back (who were rather sad to leave) and heading on her way.
“Well that was fun,” I said, lying on the grass, “You wouldn’t happen to have anything to eat, would you? I haven’t eaten in a day or two.” My stomach rumbled to confirm my statement.
Mina sighed, “Here, have a granola bar. It’s not much, but if you’re starving…”
“Thanks,” I mumbled as I shoved the bar into my mouth. My belly quieted a bit.
“Did you see Sonic’s ceremony?”
“No. Did he have one? I was sleeping till just before I found you.”
“Yeah, they knighted him and everything. I guess we can call him ‘Sir’ Sonic now.”
Mina and I talked for a while longer, the sun finally disappearing from the sky as the moon drifted between the stars. It felt good to talk to Mina, even if she was the one doing most of the talking. It was close to midnight when she finally let out a yawn.
“Wow, it’s so late… have we really been talking that long?” she asked, surprised.
“I guess so… It didn’t seem that long, anyway,” I offered. I stared up into the heavens, a gentle breeze floating through the night air. Mina got up.
“Well, I’m going to head off. It was nice talking with you again.”
I nodded, “Yeah, same.”
She looked at me uncomfortably for a few seconds, before saying, “Um… I was wondering if you wanted to do this again sometime. Talk, I mean. I don’t really have many friends to talk to…,” she trailed off.
I pondered her question. “On one condition,” I said.
“Huh? What is it?”
“That you count me as a friend,” I chuckled. I couldn’t dwell on my past all the time. I needed something to distract me. Besides, I had had fun talking to her. It was a very different change of pace from what's happened over the last couple of days.
Mina studied me closely, before her face lit up like a fireworks stand. “Of course!” she said, beaming.
I watched her walk away to a larger outcropping of tents. She disappeared between them as I slowly got up myself, making my way to the same tree I had rested up against before. I had barely taken a step, however, when a blue streak flashed past me, followed closely behind by a short, dark, spectacled human.
“Was that Sonic?” I said out loud to no one in particular. I watched him and the human continue zooming through the city, up into one of the tree canopy walkways, before finally stopping in front of a squirrel wearing a large crown- the same Mobian I had rescued back in the city. Based on what Mina had talked to me about, he was apparently the king over all the people of Knothole- King Acorn, they called him. They were barely visible from where I stood, a good few houses away. I started to walk closer in order to hear their conversation, but I didn’t really need to. I could somehow hear them from all the way over here without any trouble at all.
“...But I believe that Dr. Robotnik and his Shadow-bots have discovered the Hidden City of the Ancients!” the human was saying.
“The Hidden City of the Ancients? I thought that was a part of Mobian mythology, Uncle Nate,” said the King.
“Wait… hidden city? Didn’t that have something to do with…,” I whispered to myself.
“An unpolluted ecosystem like that needs protection from the world in general, but where Robotnik is concerned, it requires much more!” Nate continued.
“I’m in total agreement, old friend- there's no telling what Robotnik could be cooking up this time! ...And the Hidden City needs to be forewarned. I want both of you to depart first thing in the morning,” King Acorn ordered.
I continued watching Sonic as he and Nate said goodnight to the King. A hidden city- The Hidden City. Perhaps something I should check out for myself… It just might have some of the answers I’m seeking...

What brought her here ? In this place, so similar, yet so different from home; “I am…”Begins the grandmaster. “Traveling, far and wide. I hope that the results of this experience may enlighten me on a few questions that have remained unanswered for a very long time.”She sips, the sweet beverage soothing her spirits a little.
“We all are looking for something; someone… or somewhere. And sometimes, Even the most dilapidated place may hold its fair share, if you know where to look.”And judging by their appearances, everyone in this merry band of armed travelers knew their trade.
“It is now only fair for you to answer me back, I suppose” She’d add, warming her hand against the cup.
Madina nodded. “Of course. We’re on a hunt to retrieve one of our own from a different world, the world of our ancestors. He’s committed mass murder in that place. He deceived the ones who sent him there, these scholars in Fort Union, and because of this, he made his way to Earth. It was an opportunity to study the lives of our long-lost relatives–our ancestors perhaps.” Her eyes narrowed. “Instead, he’s squandered this opportunity by waging war in the name of one of their most aggressive countries. He lays waste to the countryside on the other side of the planet. He kills people who have never even seen his face, wiping their homes and their towns from the face of the earth. He’s brought young nations to their feet.” She sighed, and she lifted her pipe to her lips. Before she used it she added, “This was to be our burden. The Great Mother foretold it. We unleashed this monster upon an undeserving world, upon people who cannot possibly defend themselves against him.”
A young woman brought them a tarnished plate of rolled-up fruit leather slices. Madina tilted her head and frowned, confused.
“I was saving these,” the girl explained. “You and our guest should have them.” In truth, she was the daughter of the man who’d reluctantly offered his helm to her earlier. He was embarrassed, and he was determined to show that he could offer this native Mobian something that even her people could enjoy. All of this remained unsaid, of course, but tonight there were a few more people than usual who were washing their clothes, repairing their weapons and armor, and oiling their hair and wiping the grime from their bodies. The Earth-People knew their reputation: filthy, ignorant, backward, and so horribly violent. This wasn’t the time for them to act defiant or spiteful though, especially on a holy quest such as theirs.
Madina smiled and accepted the plate. She offered a piece to Lien-Da and then ate one herself. “Please. They’re eager to impress you, but I think they might give their own shirts to you if we don’t put a stop to this.”
This, was a story Lien-da felt she had heard before, in one way or another. A warped reflection of the same old tale of hunger for power and knowledge corrupting the mind of the best and brightest, twisting their goals like countless knives upon the wounds of the innocent and those he deemed ígnorant’ and ‘expendable’ on the march to progress.
She was no better, her people were no better. None were spared from this madness in the end, would she bemoan within herself. No. She was better than that. She was alive, she was trying, she was good enough, no matter her upbringing, her life, her constant struggles, the-
Her line of thought was broken by the young one’s present, to which she gave her thanks. Now was not the time for contrition and admonishment. She would prove herself with her actions, and not with words. But while she was at it, she couldn’t help but notice the busywork these soldiers were putting. Dirty, angry, defiant.
and yet, determined .. You could work miracles with these kind of people. And Lien-da could see it, experienced as she was in the matter.
There was little need to impress her., and without thinking, Lien-da had a soft chuckle at the mere thought of it. “In spite of our differences,”She would reply back, at last. “ I can see that we are cut from the same cloth. There’s no need to prove me anything; after all, I have already seen everything I needed to.” And she took a bite, munching silently.
“I suppose I know where I’ll be heading now, if you don’t mind company.”
On their way to Fort Union, the roving band of Earth-People stopped to hunt and forage. They were low on supplies, and this was a holy mission; there would be no looting or assault on this journey. The Mother herself had given them this calling.
Slipping through the underbrush, armed with ancient rifles and knives passed down through generations, the ones tasked with hunting stopped when they smelled wood-smoke. As happens with most human people, their hunger took a backseat to their curiosity, just for a moment. Who took shelter in the ridges of the crater's radius? Was it one of their own?

    {➹} – “WE’RE ALMOST THERE, PROMISE.”
As his roommate let out a groan the hero laughed and offered her a hand as they climbed the last hill of the night, pulling her up it with next to no effort. The sun had long since set behind the mountains, and the red hues of the sky were giving away to the darker ones of the night. Here and there the first stars were already appearing, dotting the sky with their brilliant lights.
They were the reason the two of them were there. Thanks to recent events - i.e. his roommate getting turned into a Mobian randomly - the hedgehog wanted a day for just the two of them to relax. Or night, in this case. It had been his idea to go somewhere remote and watch the stars while they camped for the night, hence the hike and the rather large pack he was carrying on his back. It was all worth it when they got to the spot he had in mind. The hill they had just climbed flattened out considerably, leading them to an empty field of lush grass illuminated solely by the moon and the lightning bugs darting around.
After insisting on setting up alone the hero practically forced the brown hedgehog to sit and let him do all the work. It would not only go faster that way but he had done it mainly so she wouldn’t see the small bouquet of flowers - roses, of course - that he had picked up earlier just for her. Only when he finished laying out their beds and starting a small fire did the hedgehog sit next to her on the grass and place the flowers in her lap, delighted by the surprise on her face.
He was even happier when she smiled, first at them then him. “What are these for?”
“What, I can’t spoil you every once in a while?” Was his cheeky answer. Did she really expect anything less by now?
After playfully nudging him, Darcy carefully laid the roses next to her and for the next few hours there was nothing but comfortable silence and minimal small talk between them as they watched the stars. Every once in a while, unbeknownst to her, the speedster would glance in her direction and feel what was now an all-too-familiar warmth bloom in his chest. He was happy that she was happy, it seemed that adjusting to her change was harder than either of them expected but he knew that, together, they could get through it. He just wanted her to have one night where she didn’t have to think about it.
He was hard pressed to say it worked as well. As time ticked by he became more and more aware of his roommate’s exhaustion and wasn’t at all surprised when she finally fell against him gently, asleep. Without a sound, the hero lifted her gingerly into his arms and walked over to the sleeping bag that was hers for the night. With a practiced grace, he managed to settle her in for the night without waking her.
After making sure there was no way for the cold to sneak in during the night the hedgehog got back to his feet, smiled down at his friend and went to sit by the fire, not quite sleepy yet himself.

Distortion: Chapter 1
Whelp, it’s finally here! Let’s go with Chapter 1 of Distortion. Still have some work to do on the blog, but imma go ahead an release chapter 1 on Tumblr. 2-5 should be coming out in the next coming days. Enjoy! C:C:
"Where is it?!" Ruby red eyes looked up from the computer they had been preoccupied with to instead focus on the white bat on the other side of the room. Said bat was on their hands and knees, rummaging through multiple drawers and boxes like a maniac. Papers, folders, and other trinkets that really had no place being there were carelessly thrown across the floor. The red eyes lowered in annoyance at the mess and the computer being used was shut off with a soft click.  "What are you doing?" The deep and smooth voice of Shadow asked as he leaned back in his chair.
Rouge's head popped out from behind her desk, locking eyes with the one addressing her. She seemed a little bewildered that she caught her stoic partner's attention but shrugged it off and replied, "A gift from Topaz." Her response was quick, and her hand waved about in dismissal. Shadow leaned back in his chair; his facial features clearly showing his lack of interest now that the culprit of distress was found out. Rouge obviously knew this, so she wordlessly returned to her searching, leaving Shadow to observe.
Shadow's eyes were still resting midway as if he were only on the verge of falling into a deep slumber. That wasn't too far from the truth. He had been staring at a screen all day, with little to no action for almost two weeks straight. The only time he could think of when he did something active was when he had apprehended some children at the park, their encounter alone having been just coincidence. Other than that, it was quiet and the perfect time to catch up on paperwork, because suddenly he was required to do that now.
"Ah-hah!" Rouge exclaimed pulling up a loose tile to reveal a large diamond the size of her hand hidden underneath. "I should've known I had hidden it there. I must be losing my touch."Shadow scoffed, "If only."
Rouge sighed and got to her feet, cradling the gem like a child as she did so, "You can at least pretend to be somewhat interested. After all, I go through all the trouble to put on the drama act whenever you decide to do something stupid."
"Yes, sure you do," Shadow groggily answered, hardly paying attention to what she was saying. He was far too tired, and the conversation was visited multiple times a week already. He closed his eyes, wanting to slip off to the dream world and pretend that the world was quiet and well.
"Well, then," she huffed, plopping down into her chair and looking over at her computer. She set the diamond by her keyboard and began to type away rapidly. Her fingernails moved flawlessly along the keyboard, years of practice showing itself off. She checked through emails, news reports, and at one point some new photos from the latest museum exhibits. Just like Shadow, she was bored with the quietness of their job and needed something to do. Even if it was illegal. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything in particular that piqued her interest. She sighed and looked over at Shadow, who, at this point, was already nodding off.
"Any plans for tonight?" Rouge asked, slumping in her chair with the most defeated expression.
"Hm?" Shadow opened an eye, looking at Rouge, "no." He took a moment to straighten his posture and stretched out his limbs. As much as he wanted to go to sleep, he was technically still at work, if one could even call it that.
Rouge smirked and leaned against her desk, caressing the diamond with a soft hum. "Well, then, seems we both have a boring evening ahead of us. How about dinner? I'll buy."
Shadow watched as Rouge lifted the large diamond, waving it back and forth in the air like a treat. To some, it may have been, but Shadow only yawned and shook his head. "I'll pass. They probably wouldn't even let me in anyway."
Rouge drew back, seemingly offended and opened her mouth to retaliate when the full realization came to her. Her eyes widen only to soften with understanding and then melding into a sort of anger. She pulled open one of her drawers and dropped her jewel inside, closing the drawer again with a louder bang than would have been reasonable."
I could convince them otherwise," Rouge suggested with anger very much evident in her tone of voice. Her leathery wings twitched behind her in agitation, presenting the emotion already clear.
Shadow nodded his head, acknowledging her offer but not at all giving his consent. He had no doubt in Rouge's skills, but he was sure that if she defended him in any way, it would only lead to more controversial debates. He had enough of those already. Grimacing at the thought, he closed his eyes once more.
Rouge watched Shadow, growing more irritated when she assumed he was falling asleep again. She threw her hands up, groaning in exasperation as she said, "If you're really that bored here then go spar with Omega."
Shadow didn't even open his eyes as he wearily shook his head, "He's helping Stewart with something. What for, I don't know."
Rouge was still angry at the answers being given to her but snickered when she heard the name spoken, "I sometimes wonder what the crazy man is building. A bomb?"
Shadow responded with a forced laugh, "Yes, I'm sure that's what he's doing. Because G.U.N. is that stupid."
Rouge tapped her desk, before turning to her computer and furiously typing once more, "I wonder what Blue is up to. It'd be nice to get out of this office." Through the corner of her eye, she smirked slyly as she joked, "and away from you."
"Hmph," Shadow tiredly answered, briefly cracking an eye to look at his partner before promptly shutting it. He wriggled a bit into his chair, trying to find a more comfortable position, before finally settling down.
After that, the room went silent, with Rouge's manicured nails typing on her keyboard being the only audible noise to be heard. Shadow sat as still as a statue, listening to the rhythmic clicking of the keys with a content expression. For an uncounted amount of time did the two sit in comfort, enjoying the other's company. That was, of course, ruined when the office door was thrown wide open and a young redheaded man came running in. Before the door even had even slammed against the wall, Shadow's eyes had snapped open, and he was on his feet, fists drawn up in offense.
Rouge didn't even look up from her computer, "Hello, Sam. What brings you to our humble abode? Wanna challenge Handsome?" she shot Shadow a teasing look which was met with an instant glare.
The newcomer to the room, Sam, stood there awestruck, his green eyes going from one Mobian to the other. His mouth hung open, trying to form words but ultimately unable to. It wasn't until a minute or so of trying to get the functions of his mouth to work together did he finally speak. "You're kidding, right?"
"What's the matter?" Shadow asked, cocking an eye ridge in question.
It was never that unusual when Sam barged into their office like this. If anything, it was a natural occurrence. Sam wasn't someone who seemed to understand that there were certain places off limits, specifically the office that Team Dark often used. However, though Shadow wanted Sam to understand this room was off limits, Rouge seemed to encourage the human to keep coming. Shadow's only guess was that the bat liked to see him suffer. Shadow probably wouldn't have minded, he was quite good at blocking out annoyance. The actual problem laid in the fact that every time Sam and he were in the same room, the human would instantly make up some ridiculous challenge. He half-expected that to be the case now, for some declaration of war to be made towards him. Judging by the look on the man's face, he guessed that wouldn't be the case today.
"There's some kind of energy thing going on. There's also a giant robot! All in Downtown! They're sending an entire unit to deal with it." Despite being a grown man, Sam appeared to be an overgrown child on Christmas Day. An odd thing to find fascinating, Shadow thought, but to each their own.
"Do they know what induced it?" Shadow queried, grabbing a jacket that was draped over his work chair. He was pulling it over his arms when Sam met his gaze with a fierce "I don't like you" kind of look.
"I heard someone say Chaos Control or something. I don't know, I'm not down there. They wanted me back here to help with other stuff," Sam pouted, folding his arms over his chest. Shadow could've sworn he heard the words "stupid commander" be muttered under the man's breath. That, however, was typical behavior for this base it seemed.
Shadow didn't wait for any further clarification. After slipping on the maroon jacket, he nodded to both beings in the room. "I'll meet you there."
With that, Shadow disappeared in a bright flash, leaving Sam and Rouge alone in the room. Sam's jaw dropped, his mind trying to register what had just happened to the hedgehog and ground his teeth. He would have started yelling if Rouge hadn't stood from her chair and walked past the human.
"Well come on," Rouge called while sauntering down the hall. "Unless you're planning on staying here."
Sam's eyes narrowed, but he hardly hesitated. He chased after the black-clothed bat, quickly meeting her stride as they made their way down the hall to the nearest exit.
C:C:
Shadow let out a small grunt as he fell from a short height, planting metal shoes into cement and brick. He picked himself up and immediately began looking for his designated target. He barely had to look before he spotted the mech that apparently required every G.U.N. unit available to apprehend it. He scoffed at the thought, especially when the machine seemed only on par to the ones Doctor Eggman usually distributed, only standing a few heads taller.
He made brief adjustments to his inhibitor rings, making sure they were on well and tight. As he did that, Shadow took in the size, shape, and what kind of power the robot could contain. Once deciphering what points would be best to attack and just how he would exact those attacks, he leaped from his perch and came crashing down to the streets below. He barely touched the ground before activating his air shoes, propelling himself at full speed.
Red eyes looked up at the path ahead, taking in the mess of rubble and even some unmoving bodies of the people who had been unfortunate enough to be caught in the fray. Shadow directed his gaze away and focused all his attention on his objective. While racing down the evacuating streets, he passed by many armed vehicles, all carrying his fellow soldiers preparing for battle. He came to a halt next to one of the vehicles, where one of the soldiers was throwing out commands to his own men.
"Clear the area. I'll deal with the machine."
Before the soldier could even get out a sound, Shadow was off, now charging head on for his self-designated enemy. As he skated closer, he began to examine the robot at a closer angle. Though it seemed it was loaded with ammo, it hardly used any of it. Instead, its attention seemed mostly focused on the buildings and ground of the surrounding area. Thus, that meant a lower chance of it being able to detect any incoming attacks from above. With that knowledge, the ebony hedgehog made his first move.
"Chaos spear," he yelled, drawing back his hand and flinging it back, sending a spear-shaped blast of energy at the base of the robot's neck-like part. Despite the small size of the projectile, upon connection, the robot stumbled forward and smashed into the side of a building. Shadow mentally winced and prayed that no one had been inside. The machine pushed itself back upright and after a few seconds of just standing there began to look around for its attacker. In those few seconds, Shadow had snapped his fingers, disappearing from his vulnerable place on the ground and to the robot's head, out of view.
Shadow took hold of the edge of the machine's head and, with as much strength as possible, swung his entire body around and slammed his metallic shoes into one of the robot's optical scanners. His response was a loud mechanical screech that resounded throughout the air.He narrowed his eyes and got down in a fighting position, waiting for the robot to retaliate. What occurred next was not what he had been expecting. The expectation of a fight was dispelled as the enemy began to look back at the ground, tramping away further into the city with more damage being made in its wake.
This wasn't natural behavior. Most of his experiences with machines were when they were attacked they usually fought back. Omega was a prime example of that. But this thing didn't seem to care if he was there or not, meaning there was something else it was here for. Once more, he teleported up to its head, this time taking the time to see what this thing was attempting to accomplish. It was now that he realized that the machine wasn't intentionally destroying the surrounding area, its mass was the culprit. If anything, all this thing seemed to be doing was looking for something...
As if in response, the robot leaned forward and took up a handful of rubble from the ground. Spreading its metal fingers, it let the dust and cement fall to the ground, slowly sifting through the debris. Shadow scoffed at how easy it had been to prove his suspicions true.
"Alright then," he smirked. Using his air shoes to give him an extra boost, he jumped into the air before curling into a ball and rolling in place. What resulted was his body colliding with metal and a horrible screeching that filled the air. He began to wear down on the metal, feeling himself fall a little more with every passing second. The sound itself was pure agony, with his sharp quills bearing down on layered steel.
He wasn't sure how long he was there, but eventually, Shadow felt his weight drop and knew he had successfully broken through. Now through the metal barrier, he began to ricochet within the head of the machine like a pinball. Sparks flew, metal pieces fell, and wires were torn from their place as he kept at it. It wasn't long before the force had become too much and he came spinning out of the machine's head, sending shards of metal and wiring raining down below. Upon escaping, Shadow uncurled from his position and came to a skidding halt, using his skates to keep himself from colliding with the ground too hard. Once he had slowed down, he turned back to the machine, ready to continue the fight but only saw his defeated enemy. The machine's once functioning body was now nothing but a metal statue, arms hanging by its sides and dead stare.
Shadow nodded at his victory, taking the opportunity to dust off his jacket. His eyes scanned the area, taking in the damage and soldiers who had started to gather around the machine to begin defusing any lethal weaponry still active.
"That was quite the performance," Shadow's ear swiveled, and he turned just in time to see Rouge come in for a landing.
"You got here faster than I thought you would," Shadow smirked, folding his arms and watching his partner walk closer.
She shrugged, "It would have been sooner if not for carrot-top."
Rouge smirked and jabbed a thumb behind her towards where Sam was now helping people deal with securing the robot.
"But enough about him," she turned her hand to instead point towards the machine, "F.Y.I., he doesn't have the doctor's mark."
Shadow nodded his head, turning his body to look at the robot at full, "Doesn't surprise me. It's similar in design, but its reactions differ greatly. I suppose we may have another mad scientist on our hands."
Rouge smirked and placed her hands on her hips, "Oh, go on, dear detective."
Shadow rolled his eyes, but he still let a small smile of amusement show through. It quickly fell, but Rouge had managed to catch it. She was going to comment about it, say something about how he was "such a softy," but stopped herself. She watched him just stare curiously at a pile of rubble closest to the machine, one hand of the mech seemingly reaching out for it. Rouge narrowed her sea-green eyes when seeing this and chased after the ebony hedgehog as he moved towards the pile.
"What's the matter?" she asked, placing a gloved hand on his shoulder.
Shadow gave her a quick glance over his shoulder before looking back at the rubble. "It was looking for something. I'm certain of that."Rouge blinked and folded her arms over her chest, giving her partner an indignant look, "How sure?"
"It was sifting through the rubble," he explained, getting down on one knee and examining one of the more massive mounds of cement and brick. Right above there was an enormous chunk of the building missing, probably having been knocked off by the robot's arm. "I believe there is something in here that it wanted.
"Rouge scoffed, "What would anyone want with a pile rubbish? Last I checked, this area doesn't even have anything worth stealing. Trust me, I would know."
"That's what I was thinking," Shadow muttered, running a hand down a slab of stone. "You wouldn't happen to have your scanner?"
Rouge placed a hand on her hip, "Of course. Never leave home without it."
Shadow stood on both feet and away from Rouge's path of sight, "Check the rubble. If nothing, check the others. That thing wanted something, and it's somewhere around here."
The white bat nodded and pulled a small disk from her sleeve, using it to analyze the mess. Shadow moved to look over her shoulder, watching anxiously to see what would come up.
"Oh…" Rouge paled and looked over at her ebony partner, "Well there is something there. I don't think it's a Chaos Emerald, but it's showing heat signatures. Whatever it is, I think...I think it's alive."
Shadow shared her look before lunging forward, immediately working to move the slabs of stone. He had told Rouge to step back, not wanting any of the stone to fall on her. Naturally, the bat did the opposite and began to help remove the stone slabs, pulling and pushing what she could out of the way.
No one even paid the two any attention. As far as they were concerned, the biggest threat was the robot with still active warheads. Rouge and Shadow were able to work in peace, well as peaceful as trying to dig up a living being could possibly be.
An hour or so passed and the sun was slowly beginning to lower, dusk falling over the city. The robot was just now finally being dismantled, and there was a loud cheer from the group of soldiers when the clear was given. For some reason, the two agents were still failed to be noticed.
"Shadow!" Rouge cried, jerking against an unusually large piece, "I-I think this is it. They're here."
Shadow followed the bat's words and hurried to help her remove the stone slab. With his help, the piece was quickly moved from the pile. Rouge let go and immediately ran forward while Shadow discarded the removed stone safely. Just as he set it down on the ground, he heard his name screamed and whirled around.
"What is it?" he hurried over, moving to stand next to his partner. His question was never answered, but it didn't need to be. His eyes went wide like saucers when he saw what they had just dug up.
Lying there, unmoving, was a white hedgehog with a familiar fan of white quills. Thin arms wrapped around the equally small body as the Mobian below drew in shuddering breaths. He was weak and practically every part of him was covered in dirt and–was that blood? There were bruises and cuts all over his body, the one most prominent being a large gash on his upper right arm. There was blood oozing from the blemish, but it wasn't anything fatal. But that wasn't what had the two concerned…
"He's not supposed to be here," Shadow was the one to mutter, taking a cautious step forward and getting down on one knee. He placed a hand on the wounded Mobian's good shoulder, causing the white hedgehog to draw in a sharp intake of breath.
Rouge swallowed and held her hand over her mouth, looking at her surroundings in uncertainty. While there were multiple people out, no one seemed to have any interest in them still. She counted that as a blessing from the gods. Shadow took a tighter hold of that shoulder he held and began to shake it, trying to coax the person to open their eyes.
"Silver?" he called. No response. He began to shake him more vigorously, "Silver, get up."
The Mobian only tensed and curled in on himself. A small whimper escaped his mouth, and an amber eye cracked open. That eye met Shadow's and the body below immediately froze up. Not a muscle moved, a breath made, nor did the eye itself move. It was as if the hedgehog had turned to stone.
Shadow naturally was very confused. What had he done? Was this his doing or was there something wrong with Silver? Did he kill him? Was he dead?!
"It's Silver, right?" Rouge asked, getting down next to Shadow. The question wasn't geared towards Silver, but rather towards Shadow for confirmation. But just as her voice was made heard, the once frozen eye zoned in on Rouge. Both eyes opened as a look of what could only be interpreted as a silent plea.
Rouge too was put off by the sudden look given to her. Was this natural behavior? She cast a glance towards Shadow again before finally addressing the white hedgehog. "I'm Rouge. You don't know me, do you?"
Silver didn't even respond, instead preferring to turn his gaze back to Shadow. Weakly, he raised a hand and placed it on the ebony Mobian's which still rested firmly on his shoulder. Though his face still held fear, he said with the shakiest voice, "Yo-you have no idea how nice it is to s-see a fa-familiar face."
Before Shadow or Rouge could even respond, Silver's eyes slid closed, and that was the last of the conversation. He was out cold, and the two agents didn't know what they were meant to do from here. So far, all they knew was that a person who they and more had assumed dead, was now passed out right in front of them. Passed out but very much alive. Once the shock began to end, the two shook out of their stupor and looked at one another.
"What do we do?" Rouge immediately asked, glancing back down at Silver's unconscious form. "H-he's not dead, and Stone…you know–"
"We can worry about that later," Shadow interrupted her, moving closer towards the unconscious being. He began to move the body into a more comfortable position. "Right now he needs medical treatment."
Rouge spluttered and grabbed hold of Shadow's arm, yanking him away roughly, "Where are you going to take him? You can't just bring him to a hospital. They'll look for I.D. or-or-or something! Which he doesn't have! What are you going to tell them when he doesn't show up on their records?!"
"Well do you have any better ideas?" He snapped back, eyes narrowed in challenge. He glared her down the best he could from his kneeling position, but it held little effect. Rouge only nodded in response, her eyes closing in a way that was meant to convey the emotion of "I'm smarter than you, and everyone knows it." Shadow only scoffed, rolling his eyes, before beginning to gather up the other hedgehog.
"I'm taking him. We can tal-""I wasn't done," Rouge bared her teeth and grabbed one of Shadow's quills, yanking him back. Her reward was a pained grunt which she smirked smugly at.
"As I was saying," she got back to her feet, dusting off the dirt that had collected on her knees, "take him to your place."
"What?!" Shadow snarled, dropping Silver onto the ground a little more roughly than he should have. "Why mine?! Yours is bigger."
"Yeah, but yours is more inconspicuous. After all, where's the first place they look when they suspect something's been stolen?" Her smirk only grew wider. She took a step forward giving him a brief pat on the head.
Shadow swatted back the hand and persisted in shaking his head "no."
"Come on, it'll be fun," Rouge continued, gently pushing Shadow closer towards the unconscious hedgehog's form. "It'll only be for a couple of days."
"You make this sound like it's some kind of walk in the park," Shadow snapped, his hands clenching tightly. "If we can't take him to the hospital then the G.U.N. infirmary will have to–"
"And if they find out what he can do?!" Rouge almost screamed at him. Her eyes were narrowed dangerously, and a hand pushed into the bag by her hip which Shadow knew full well what was inside. She took a brief pause to lower her voice before continuing, "They'll do to him what they do to everything else they see as a threat. You know that."
Shadow opened his mouth, going to retaliate, but only ended up closing it. She had a point. Those seen as threats were almost always captured and then researched for G.U.N.'s use. If not that, it was for some other reason that never ended well. They'd done it with many of the Mobians of this world. Most got out, their abilities seen as easy to combat. But this one...Shadow already knew Silver wouldn't be as lucky.
"Fine," Shadow finally relinquished, grunting as if to add to the already known fact of his disapproval. "I'll take him until he wakes up."
"Oh, don't look so grim," Rouge patted his shoulder with an amused smile, "You'll only be taking him until he's fit to take care of himself. And if it's the commander you're worried about, well, of course, you know better than anyone that I can cover you." To add more to the offer, she gave him a wink which only got an eye roll in response.
Shadow was not at all happy with this predicament and Rouge knew it. But Shadow also knew that the bat was right. Even if he did everything he could to protect Silver, it would only raise suspicion. And suspicion would only lead to more trouble for all of them. Once more, he leaned over and took Silver into his arms, holding him steady and tightly. He was so light and thin; he was almost sure he'd break like a twig if he weren't careful.
"Take as long as you need," Rouge told him again. Her voice more gentle and assuring, "If anything goes wrong... don't kill him." Shadow couldn't help but chuckle at that comment. Adjusting the still unconscious hedgehog in his arms, he calls out those two famous words, and he once again disappears in a quick flash of light. Rouge waits there for a few minutes longer, staring down at the ground in deep thought. It seemed that their two weeks of nothing had finally come to a close.
